How do I clear or sanitize the memory on my Lightning 37000 series Vector Network Analyzer?
answer
Security Procedures for the 37XXX VNAs: This note describes the precautions to take when using the Anritsu Lightning 37XXX VNAs in a secure environment. There are different locations in the CPU which are used to store different parameters of the VNA, and an understanding of the contents of these locations and the procedures to clear them is important when working in secure environments. The following locations in the processor are used to store data and other parameters. Memory Description DRAM Running firmware code, Application downloads and drives. Contents are completely erased when system power is turned off. SRAM Stores last front panel set-up, calibration data tables, and state storage. Also stores data when user selects Save front panel set up and cal date on memory. Contents are saved even after power off, since it is backed up by a battery. System will have to be reset to erase data (see erasing memory). CPU Flash Contains boot up code used to run the VNA firmware upon boot up of the instrument. This location doesn't save any user data and is not accessible to the user. Memory contents cannot be removed by turning power off or resetting the instrument. But there is no user accessible data on the CPU flash. Hard Disk Saves user files, including: calibrations, S2p data, test data, graphical data, instrument states, set-up parameters. Memory cannot be deleted by turning power off or resetting the instrument. The hard disk will have to be formatted to erase all the contents. This can be done through the front panel. Erasing Memory To erase instrument memory in a secure environment where the VNA may be shared between different users. Different Reset Levels 1) Pressing the key on the front panel: defaults current state, erases memory location (SRAM) that saves current set-up and calibration data and clears trace memory 2) Pressing the key and the key: defaults current state, erases the memory location (SRAM) that saves current set-up and calibration data and clears trace memory. In addition, it also clears internal memories (memory 1-10) that are used to store set-up and cal data. 3)Pressing the key and the key: Similar to and in addition also clears reserved parameters. This is the highest level of system reset. Reserved parameters include GPIB addresses, Coax/WG cal kit info, test set configuration (including millimeter-wave, panorama), external source configuration, receiver mode, output (printer), DUT protection, adapter removal info, and color configuration. Erase is accomplished by writing "10101010"'s into these memory locations which meet the DoD wipe memory routine (DoD 5220.22-M). NOTE: For highly secure environments, it is recommended that the hard drive be removed using option 4A; and the system should be operated using an external hard drive. 3700/4A - Option 4A, External SCSI-2 Hard Disk Drive compatibility (Internal HDD removed, External SCSI-2 PCMCIA drive ordered separately). In addition, the following SCSI drives are available for use with option 4A: 2000-1397 Lightning SCSI-2 External PCMCIA Drive (for use in the United States) Includes: PCMCIA Drive with Power Supply, SCSI-2 Interface Cable, and pre-programmed Memory Card. (Requires Option 4A installed in 37000 VNA) 2000-1398 Lightning SCSI-2 External PCMCIA Drive (for use in Europe, except United Kingdom) 2000-1399 Lightning SCSI-2 External PCMCIA Drive (for use in the United Kingdom) 2000-1400 Lightning SCSI-2 External PCMCIA Drive (for use in Australia) The external hard drive can remain in the secure area or be destroyed (disintegrated, incinerated, pulverized, shredded or melted). In a nonsecure environment, a spare external hard drive can be used.
