How do I calculate Noise Power density (dBm/Hz) from a measurement made with the MS2711D or MS272x spectrum analyzer?

On the instrument, use a Noise Marker. If you have a captured trace (in dBm) that you want to convert to dBm/Hz, use the following formula: dBm/Hz = dBm - 10 * log(1.03 * RBW)

When I turn on Marker Noise, the detector changes to RMS, why is that?

The RMS detector is the best choice for noise measurements as it provides unbiased averaging of the signal. This gives a stable answer (because of the averaging) and gives the correct answer (because it is "unbiased"). Contrast this to the peak detector, where the answer continually grows over time, and the Sample detector, which provides no averaging

Are Anritsu PC applications for downloading files from the Site Master supported on 64 bit Windows OS's?

Currently Anritsu does not but is working diligently to provide a solution.

What methodolgy is used to derive GPS data for the Master products?

The GPS coordinates delivered by the instruments are based on the WGS-84 methodology of determining position.

How do you determine if my Site Master adapters are working properly?

1. You can use Site Master to verify your adapters. The User's Guides of all of our Site Masters have a procedure for Return Loss Measurements. 2. When you measure the return loss of your adapter after an Open Short Load (OSL) calibration, please pay attention to the frequency range of the termination (load) used. For example, 7/16 load works to 8 GHz, SM/PL works to 4 GHz, 28N50-2 works to 18 GHz. 3. Adding another adapter between the adapter under test and the load will degrade the measurement of the return loss of the adapter under test. Plus if one adapter is really bad, you won't know which one is the culprit. 4. Perform the OSL calibration at the Site Master test port. The OSL calibration needs to be performed at the same place you will be connecting the adapter to be tested. Then attach an appropriate load. You are now measuring the return loss of the adapter. 5. Ultimately you have to have known good terminations and a known good Site Master to be able to perform these measurements. If you have more than one unknown, then it becomes very difficult to tell where the problem is. Anritsu offers calibration services for Site Master and also for the loads as well as some of the adapters. If you still are having problems, please consider sending your equipment in for calibration.

What are the Universal Serial Bus(USB) to Serial Adapter data rate transmission limitations?

The following limitation exists for most commonly used USB to Serial Adapters: The baud rate only goes from 9600 - 38400 kbs.

Can I use the InstaCal I got with my new S331C on my S331B? How about my S114C?

Your InstaCal module can be used on any S11xC, S33xC, or later models. InstaCal will not work on the older "B" models or on the S251C.

How many data points are there on my MS2711D spectrum analyzer trace?

The MS2711D sweeps have 401 data points.

MS2711D pops up a message indicating that it is Performing System Calibration, about every 10 minutes and would like to know why.

This issue is resolved with a firmware upgrade to latest available firmware version.

How many significant digits should be used for the accuracy spec?

We recommend two significant digits be used for Anritsu product specifications.

Can the power level of the Signal Generator - MS2711D (With CW Generator Option) be changed remotely when you are programming the unit?

The power level of the signal generator(Option 28 for MS2711D-CW signal generator mode) can only be controlled by an external step attenuator. The step attenuator is a part of the CW Signal Generator kit (Anritsu part number 61534) that is needed for CW Signal Generator Mode. This kit also includes a splitter that feeds the signal into the instrument's RF input. The display of the MS2711D shows the output power and the frequency when the unit is set to Signal Generator Mode.

Do we sell antennas that support RFID frequencies for our spectrum analyzers?

Not currently, users must purchase antennas from another source that sells antennas in that frequency range.

Is it possible to set more than 5 segmented limit lines on MS2711D?

No, it is not possible to set more than 5 segmented limit lines on the MS2711D however we have other Handheld Spectrum Analyzers in which a limit line can consist of up to 40 segments. The model numbers are MS2721B, MS2723B, and MS2724B.

I'm trying to install the Handheld Code Loader (HHCL) program on an older PC running Windows 2000 or Windows ME. During installation the setup program informs me that my system files are out of date and asks if I want to update them. I choose yes and the program acts like it has upgraded them and asks me to reboot. After I reboot, I get the same messages as if the files were not upgraded.

After the program is downloaded and unzipped, there should be three files present: 1. Setup.exe 2. CodeLoader_vX.XX.CAB 3. SETUP.LST Please open SETUP.LST using Notepad. You will see a structure like this in the second paragraph. Can I enter the sweep time manually in Spectrum Analyzer mode?

Yes you can. You can go into the sweep menu (MT8222A, MS272XB) or "MEAS/DISP" menu (MS2711D, S332D, S312D, MT8212B) and select "Min Sweep Time" and enter the desired sweep time. If you enter a time that is faster than what the instrument is capable of then the instrument will change the sweep speed and default to whatever the instrument can do. For every measurement point, the instrument spends a certain time and if it is too fast, then it is measured again. This is why the actual sweep time is usually a little bit longer than the requested time. In zero span mode, the sweep times are exact.

I am using the MS2711 and MS2711D Spectrum Analyzers. The MS2711 does not have an option to set manual attenuation like the MS2711D does. Is it possible to add this feature to the MS2711?

No, the MS2711 is an obsolete product and there are no plans to add this feature to this model.

Does the internal power meter (option 29) of S332D require an external detector to measure power?

No external detector is required for this option. The spectrum analyzer board and detection circuit is used to provide the user with frequency selective power measurements.

I'm making a field strength measurement and see an area of the display that is much higher than the rest. Why does it do that?

The field strength measurement algorithm in the MS272xB, MS271xB, MT8222A, MS2711D and S332D takes the antenna factor of the selected antenna into account to calculate field strength. This causes the increase you see over the bandwidth of the antenna. Measurements of field strength are only valid in that region since the performance of the antenna outside of its specified bandwidth isn't known.

Why does my MS2721B give me an input saturation warning when other instruments don't?

The MS272xB, MS271xB, MS2711D, MT8222A and MS20x6A are equipped with a broadband detector that is designed to sense signal levels at the input to the first mixer that may cause inaccurate measurements due to saturation. Most competitive instruments don't have a method to deliver such a warning and allow the user to take measurements that likely are inaccurate. These inaccuracies can include lower amplitude values and the generation of signal harmonics due to mixer saturation.

How accurate is the positioning location of the GPS (opt 31)?

Approximately +/- 20 Meters but this is not specified.
