The Impact of Wind on Checkweighers and the Effectiveness of Windshield Covers

Technical Note (For Pharmaceutical) Vol.25 The Impact of Wind on Checkweighers and the Effectiveness of Windshield CoversSimilar to static scales and electronic balances, checkweighers are recommended for use in wind-free environments. However, in actual onsite conditions, airflow from air conditioning systems or wind entering from outside can affect weighing accuracy.
In this paper, we will reproduce this phenomenon through simulated experiments and explain the effect of a cover in mitigating wind influence.

Technical Note (For Pharmaceutical) Vol.24 Advanced Application of Missing Product and Shape Inspection using X-ray Inspection SystemX-ray inspection devices are utilized in many fields as multitasking inspection machines that are capable of various types of inspections simultaneously, not limited to foreign object detection. Manufacturers of X-ray inspection systems use different terminologies, but the mechanism of detecting defective products by applying multiple image processing technology to x-ray images is the same.In the previous issue, we provided a basic introduction to missing product and shape inspection functions. In this issue, we explain in an advanced application how to approach making a close-to-accurate evaluation when selecting between two available functions for the same inspection purpose.

Different manufacturers of X-ray inspection systems use several terminologies, but the mechanism of applying multiple image processing techniques to detect defects in the transmitted image is the same.We offer about ten inspection functions related to missing items and product shapes, and we have been receiving more and more inquiries about which one to choose from among these options. This paper explains each function of our X-ray systems using actual examples. Regarding count detection, quantity detection, relative vir tual weight measurement, and shape inspection, we will look at which function to select based on the applications and the details to be inspected.

Measures to Prevent False Rejects in Metal Detectors: External Noise Part 2

Technical Note (For Pharmaceutical) Vol.22 Measures to Prevent False Rejects in Metal Detectors: External Noise Part 2In the previous technical note*, we explained false rejects in metal detectors caused by electrical noises such as radiation noise, conduction noise, and static noise. In this paper, we will focus on false rejects and countermeasures caused by two types of noises. One is the noise that occurs when metal parts of production equipment move within the magnetic field generated by the metal detector, and the other is the noise caused by electromagnetic induction occurring in peripheral equipment such as roller conveyors and packaging machines.

*Please refer to "Measures to Prevent False Rejects in Metal Detectors: External Noise Part 1".

Measures to Prevent False Rejects in Metal Detectors: External Noise Part 1

Technical Note (For Pharmaceutical) Vol.21 July, 2024 Measures to Prevent False Rejects in Metal Detectors: External Noise Part 1Did you know that a metal detector generates a magnetic field with an optimum frequency to accuratelydetect changes in the effects of the product being inspected when metal contaminants are mixed in and when they are not mixed in? Each metal detector manufacturer uses different setting procedures, but themechanism is the same to detect changes in the magnetic field that occur when a metal contaminant passes through a tunnel-shaped detection head (magnetic field tunnel). Anritsu metal detectors start operationafter first selecting a sensitivity mode, which is a combination of magnetic field frequencies with different characteristics. This paper explains about the sensitivity mode.

Tips for Effective Use of X-ray Inspection Systems: Noise Removal and Detection Limit

Technical Note (For Pharmaceutical) Vol.19 March, 2024 Tips for Effective Use of X-ray Inspection Systems: Noise Removal and Detection LimitAnritsu X-ray inspection systems generate X-ray transmission images and set the contaminant detection limit after the product to be inspected is fed 10 times. The image is monochrome and the density changes depending on the amount of X-ray transmission. If the limit value is set in consideration of variations in the amount of X-ray transmission (shadow density) of PASS product, it is possible to make accurate OK/NG (PASS/FAIL) evaluation for the products conveyed one after another on the production line.

In contrast, when there are variations in production lots or in the conveyed conditions, etc., the change in the shade of the transmitted image becomes steeper than usual, and the peak of the waveform that indicates the change exceeds the detection limit (threshold) and may be falsely evaluated as a defective product. Such changes in product effect becomes noise. Since noise can be reduced by image processing, contaminant detection sensitivity can be maintained while suppressing frequent false rejections.

This paper explains how to make adjustment using the monitor screen of Anritsu X-ray Inspection System. Also, examples of applications that are prone to change in product effects (the cause of noise) will be introduced.

Is the choice of algorithm appropriate?

Technical Note (For general use) Vol.18 June, 2023 Is the choice of algorithm appropriate? Most of X-ray inspection users in the food industry may not be so particular about choosing the algorithm (method) when setting the detection sensitivity as long as the in-house criteria (the type and size of test pieces to be detected) are satisfied. Wouldn't you be interested in trying a different algorithm if detection sensitivity surpassing the internal standards can be achieved?

Each product has characteristics such as overlap, steep edges, granularity, linear shape, etc., and image processing is performed to erase (reduce) the product effect. This is the "Contaminant Detection Algorithm", and by selecting the most suitable one for the product, the detection sensitivity can be improved. This can minimize complaints from consumers and business partners and strengthen quality assurance. In this paper, we will explain the difference in detection sensitivity due to the selection of the "Contaminant Detection Algorithm" using easy-to-understand examples.

Preventing false evaluation: Unifying the product orientation

Technical Note Vol.17 March, 2022A metal detector creates a magnetic field in its detector head and monitors a change in a magnetic field when a product passes it through. When the signal exceeds the set value (threshold), it evaluates the change as a metal contamination.

This time, we explain how the direction in which the product enters the detector head changes the product effect value and evaluation for PASS/Defective products.

Is the product fed properly when performing the auto-setting?

Technical Note Vol.16 October, 2021Metal detectors are widely used from raw materials to final processes for the purpose of detecting metal contaminants in foods, pharmaceuticals, industrial products, etc. To keep the standards for food safety, product quality managers are required to perform the sensitivity settings correctly when using the metal detectors. Our customer support center frequently receives inquiries from customers using our metal detectors that they cannot meet the in-house standards of sensitivity and that there are many malfunctions on site.

This paper explains the correct way of feeding the product when performing the auto-setting. By identifying the cause of the problem, proper measures can be taken.

Metal Detector-Method for Fixing Test Pieces during Sensitivity Check

Technical Note Vol.11 October, 2016Those who use a metal detector can perform a sensitivity check by attaching a test piece on a product prior to the start of production. Detection of test pieces by the metal detector would vary depending on which position of a detection head (the tunnel where a magnetic field is generated) test pieces pass through. This paper will explain how the detection of test pieces vary and how to fix a test piece on a sample product.
