How do I clear or sanitize the memory on my Lightning 37000 series Vector Network Analyzer?

Security Procedures for the 37XXX VNAs: This note describes the precautions to take when using the Anritsu Lightning 37XXX VNAs in a secure environment. There are different locations in the CPU which are used to store different parameters of the VNA, and an understanding of the contents of these locations and the procedures to clear them is important when working in secure environments. The following locations in the processor are used to store data and other parameters. Memory Description DRAM Running firmware code, Application downloads and drives. Contents are completely erased when system power is turned off. SRAM Stores last front panel set-up, calibration data tables, and state storage. Also stores data when user selects Save front panel set up and cal date on memory. Contents are saved even after power off, since it is backed up by a battery. System will have to be reset to erase data (see erasing memory). CPU Flash Contains boot up code used to run the VNA firmware upon boot up of the instrument. This location doesn't save any user data and is not accessible to the user. Memory contents cannot be removed by turning power off or resetting the instrument. But there is no user accessible data on the CPU flash. Hard Disk Saves user files, including: calibrations, S2p data, test data, graphical data, instrument states, set-up parameters. Memory cannot be deleted by turning power off or resetting the instrument. The hard disk will have to be formatted to erase all the contents. This can be done through the front panel. Erasing Memory To erase instrument memory in a secure environment where the VNA may be shared between different users. Different Reset Levels 1) Pressing the key on the front panel: defaults current state, erases memory location (SRAM) that saves current set-up and calibration data and clears trace memory 2) Pressing the key and the key: defaults current state, erases the memory location (SRAM) that saves current set-up and calibration data and clears trace memory. In addition, it also clears internal memories (memory 1-10) that are used to store set-up and cal data. 3)Pressing the key and the key: Similar to and in addition also clears reserved parameters. This is the highest level of system reset. Reserved parameters include GPIB addresses, Coax/WG cal kit info, test set configuration (including millimeter-wave, panorama), external source configuration, receiver mode, output (printer), DUT protection, adapter removal info, and color configuration. Erase is accomplished by writing "10101010"'s into these memory locations which meet the DoD wipe memory routine (DoD 5220.22-M). NOTE: For highly secure environments, it is recommended that the hard drive be removed using option 4A; and the system should be operated using an external hard drive. 3700/4A - Option 4A, External SCSI-2 Hard Disk Drive compatibility (Internal HDD removed, External SCSI-2 PCMCIA drive ordered separately). In addition, the following SCSI drives are available for use with option 4A: 2000-1397 Lightning SCSI-2 External PCMCIA Drive (for use in the United States) Includes: PCMCIA Drive with Power Supply, SCSI-2 Interface Cable, and pre-programmed Memory Card. (Requires Option 4A installed in 37000 VNA) 2000-1398 Lightning SCSI-2 External PCMCIA Drive (for use in Europe, except United Kingdom) 2000-1399 Lightning SCSI-2 External PCMCIA Drive (for use in the United Kingdom) 2000-1400 Lightning SCSI-2 External PCMCIA Drive (for use in Australia) The external hard drive can remain in the secure area or be destroyed (disintegrated, incinerated, pulverized, shredded or melted). In a nonsecure environment, a spare external hard drive can be used.

What is the dedicated GPIB used for in the 37000D series Lightning VNA?

It is used to connect to external peripherals and/or instrumentation for network analyzer controlled operations (e.g. plotters, frequency counters, frequency synthesizers and power meters).

How many setups can be stored in the Lightning series VNA?

Ten front panel states (no calibration) can be stored and recalled from non-volatile memory locations. The current front panel setup is automatically stored in non-volatile memory at instrument power down. When power is applied, the instrument returns to its last front panel setup.

How often should my 37000D be factory calibrated?

The suggested calibration interval is 1 year however the customer's application of the product may require a different calibration interval.

How do I restore my 37000D back to factory default?

In order to restore the 37000D to factory default simply push the "Default Program" button, then the "0" button. This will restore the system to factory default settings including clearing the calibration kit information. The Calibration Kit will need to be reloaded.

How stable is the Signal source frequency in the Lightning series VNA?

Temperature: <5 x 10-E9 over 0 deg. to 55 deg. Celsius range Aging: <1 x 10-E9/day

What is the fast CW operation in the 37000D series Lightning series VNA?

The Fast CW is an ideal mode of operation to attain rapid data over GPIB. To achieve a fast measurement rate, the display is not updated and only the raw S-parameter or user-defined parameter of the active channel is measured.

What is the System GPIB in the 37000D series Lightning VNA used for?

It is used to connect to an external controller for use in remote programming of the network analyzer. The address can be set from the front panel and can range from 1 to 30.

What type of external trigger can be used in Lightning series VNA?

External TTL triggering for 37000D series VNA measurement. 10 K ohm input impedance, BNC female.

What is the size of internal hard disk drive for Lightning series VNA?

It is 0.5 GB, used to store and recall measurement and calibration data and front-panel setups. File names can be 1 to 8 characters long, and must begin with a character, not a number. Extensions are automatically assigned.

What are the input power supply voltages that the 37000D series VNA supports?

The power requirements are: 85-240 volts, 48-63 Hz. The VNA automatically senses the voltage line present.

Our Anritsu 37347C VNA is getting the following error messages: 6024 PHS LCK FAIL DE and 5110 RF PWR UNLEVELED. If I disable port 1 the errors go away.

It is apparent that something has failed in the down converter of the signal source of your VNA. If you look at the block diagrams for your VNA, you will see that the VNA has only one internal signal source that is used for S parameter measurements. This signal source is a 2 - 20 GHz YIG oscillator that is used direct with filters for frequencies above 2 GHz. Below 2 GHz, this source is down converted with a fixed frequency oscillator, filtered and amplified. It is this down converter assembly that has apparently failed in your VNA based on the symptoms you described. There is no capability to substitute an alternative source to make S parameter measurements. The best course of action is to send your VNA to an Anritsu service center for repair.

Can I use non-Anritsu Calibration Kits to calibrate my 37000D?

Yes, calibration coefficients for non-Anritsu calibration kits can be entered manually through the user defined connector type. During the calibration process, the 37000D will prompt the user for a connector type. If the user selects "User Defined," the 37000D will then allow the user to enter the calibration coefficients manually.

What are the different sweep types that the Signal source of Lightning series VNA supports?

It supports Linear, CW, Marker, or N-Discrete point sweeps.

What is the Ext. Analog In on the rear panel connector in Lightning 37000D series VNA?

It is +/- 50 volt input for displaying external signals on the LCD, the connector is BNC female.

How do I use a sliding load?

The first step in using the sliding load is to check and adjust, if necessary, the width of the pin depth gauge. Then the pin depth of the sliding load must be set to minus .0002 This pin gap insures that the shoulders of the male and female connectors are sufficiently spaced so as not to meet, yet they are close enough that the characteristic impedance at the interface is not adversely affected. After the pin gap is set, the sliding load must be mated to the test port of the VNA when prompted by the analyzer during calibration. Always position the slider as close to the test port as possible when making connection. This will aid in centering the pin. It is easier to mate the connectors when they are in the vertical plain, again to make it easier to align the two connectors. Gently tap the shaft of the sliding load if the center conductor is obviously misaligned. When visually centered, carefully mate the sliding load to the test port connector. The Anritsu VNA will prompt the user through all the steps to accomplish a sliding load calibration. When prompted, insert the fixed load, this termination sets the characteristic impedance for frequencies below 2 GHz.
