How PIM Can Affect FirstNet Service

Public-safety professionals need reliable communications to aid them in their lifesaving missions. Many of these tasks require broadband services, including access to data-intensive applications, databases searches, and sharing pictures and videos. To address the broadband requirements of first responders, the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet), the first high-speed, nationwide wireless broadband network dedicated to public safety, was created. FirstNet will leverage existing Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology that, unlike LMR technology, enables extremely high-speed data communications. However, its allocation of 20 megahertz of bandwidth (band 14) to the 700 MHz public-safety environment is introducing new high power signals that induce external (environmental) passive intermodulation (PIM) and reduce the sensitivity of other 700 MHz systems.

This webinar will introduce the audience to the causes of PIM and how it affects and degrades communications systems. We will discuss measuring and mitigating PIM problems at radio sites shared with 700 MHz FirstNet systems.
