Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) Testing

Stable communication network supports industrial advancement

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is an IoT technology specialized for industrial applications such as factories, logistics, mining, agriculture, and construction. In particular, smart factories use wireless LAN, Bluetooth® technology, 4G/LTE, 5G, and other communication technologies to connect industrial equipment, sensors, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), autonomous maneuvering transport robots (AMRs) and other devices to a network to automate the transportation of goods, collect data in real time, and perform remote monitoring and remote operation. Utilizing IIoT in this way will give rise to Industry 4.0, which aims to improve factory efficiency and productivity. Industrial IoT testing is crucial to ensure the reliability and performance of these systems.

Communications Quality of IIoT Devices

IIoT device

Challenge

IIoT devices use whichever communication method is best suited to their respective uses. The transmission and receiver performance of wireless communications is determined by the relevant specifications, such that development engineers have to conduct tests in accordance with the standards to confirm the communications quality.
When developing IIoT devices, the following phenomena can cause communication quality to deteriorate, resulting in communication interruptions, slow speed, or slowdowns, so that development engineers need to use appropriate measurement equipment to investigate the cause and apply appropriate countermeasures.

  • Internal interference: Jamming radio waves emitted by the power loops, inverters, CPUs, LCDs, etc. of IIoT devices
  • Insufficient matching with peripheral circuits: Loose connections of wireless communication modules, antennas, coaxial cables for antenna wiring, etc.

Testing Solution

To solve communication problems attributed to IIoT devices, Anritsu provides solutions to evaluate the wireless performance and throughput of wireless LAN, Bluetooth technology,4G/ LTE, and 5G.
Anritsu spectrum analyzers contribute to investigate internal interference in equipment, while Anritsu vector network analyzers are useful for evaluating components such as antennas and cables. Anritsu provides optimal solutions for each application.

IIoT Communication Environment

Factory network environment

Challenge

When installing IIoT devices in a factory, depending on the installation location, radio interference and attenuation may cause the communication speed to drop or disconnect, resulting in data transfer errors and other communication problems. It is especially important to minimize network latency for equipment that requires real-time control, such as AGVs, AMRs, and arm robots. Network engineers are required to regularly evaluate the IIoT communication environment to maintain stable communication.

Testing Solution

To investigate the cause of communication interference, using the real-time measurement function of Anritsu's Spectrum Analyzers Handheld enables users to detect even momentary radio interference. In addition, by utilizing the mapping function of the Field Master Pro™ MS2090A, users can also record the position and radio wave strength of desired waves (target signals) and interference, and visualize radio wave environment.
When network latency is a problem, this can be overcome by using two Network Master Pro MT1000A units to measure latency and identify problem areas. Based on the results, it is possible to minimize the latency by reviewing the placement of the access points.
