Radio Communication Analyzer MT8821C Adds Support for Cat-M1/NB-IoT 3GPP-Defined RF Measurement and IP Data Transfer Functions

23/10/2017

Rollout of LTE Cat-M1 and NB-IoT Software Options for MT8821C

Anritsu Radio Communication Analyzer MT8821C

Anritsu Corporation (President Hirokazu Hashimoto) starts rollout on October 23, 2017 of the company’s LTE Category M1 Measurement Software MX882116C, LTE Category M1 IP Data Transfer MX882116C-006, NB-IoT Measurement Software MX882117C, and NB-IoT IP Data Transfer MX882117C-006 software packages adding LTE Cat-M1 and NB-IoT 3GPP-defined RF measurement tests as well as IP data transferring functions to its Radio Communications Analyzer MT8821C.

The MT8821C is an all-in-one tester incorporating RF TRx test functions for 3GPP/3GPP2 cellular terminals, and base-station simulation functions. The new software options offer the RF measurements defined in articles 6 and 7 of the 3GPP TS36.521-1 recommendations for LTE Cat-M1 and NB-IoT terminals. In addition, the eDRX and PSM low-power-consumption technologies are supported along with IP data transferring functions used by throughput measurement and function tests.

As the fast follow vendor to implement measurement solutions supporting the new LTE Cat-M1 and NB-IoT standards for IoT, Anritsu expects to play a key role in helping development and early deployment of IoT devices and services with wide-ranging applications in smart meters, smart factories, smart agriculture, etc.

[Development Background]
IoT devices are expected to have wide-ranging uses in fields such as smart meters, home security, freight tracking, automated vending machines, healthcare, etc. Two key requirements for IoT devices are low power consumption and wide area coverage, which are regulated by these LTE Cat-M1 and NB-IoT communications standards. The LTE Cat-M1 standard is currently entering service with North American carriers, and communications operators in Japan, Europe, etc., are expecting to start services during 2017. Moreover, the NB-IoT standard is entering service with European carriers, and operators in Japan, China, etc., are planning service rollouts. Both standards use LPWA technology and both low power consumption and stable performance are required in addition to these wireless communications functions.

Consequently, Anritsu has added these LTE Cat-M1 and NB-IoT wireless communications solutions to its MT8821C to speed development of IoT devices.

[MT8821C Product Outline]
The MT8821C is an all-in-one tester with built-in RF TRx test functions and base-station simulation functions for LTE-Advanced terminals; it supports tests of TRx characteristics while the terminal is communicating.
In addition, since the MT8821C can control the terminal by signaling it supports measurements directly without changes depending on the chipset, which cuts measurement environment setup costs.
