Weighing

Weighing

Drive down costs, improve product quality, and protect your brand reputation with Anritsu's weighing solutions.

What's Your Challenge?

Are you looking to reduce giveaway in packaged food, ensure correct dosage in pharmaceutical products, or detect missing components in hardware kits? Whatever your challenge, we have the right weighing technology for you

Why Invest In Weighing Technology?

Lower Production Costs And Increase ROI

Lower Production Costs And Increase ROI

In sectors with low margins – such as food – or high-value products – such as cosmetics, cannabis, nutraceuticals – even the smallest product giveaway can lead to thousands of dollars of extra costs per year. With the right weighing solution, it’s possible to decrease product giveaway and maximize your production efficiency.

Reduce Consumer Complaints

Reduce Consumer Complaints

In times of rising inflation, consumers more than ever expect to receive what they paid for. Underweight or incomplete products can lead to complaints and damage brand reputation, sometimes deterring consumers from buying your products indefinitely.

Increase Product Safety

Increase Product Safety

A high-accuracy checkweigher will help you ensure correct dosage on pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, or cannabis products, increasing consumers’ safety.

Avoid Penalties / Fees

Avoid Penalties / Fees

Using scales with the appropriate accuracy level for the type of product is a requirement of the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST), which is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Checkweighing

How it Works

There are two types of weigh-cells: Strain gauge and Force balance. When a product pushes down on a strain gauge cell, the distortion is transformed into electrical signals, which are then converted into weight readings. Strain gauge checkweighers are cost-effective solutions for most applications. They are ideal for heavier products and intense usage. With force balance cells, coils compensate for the distortion by generating electromagnetic force, which is then converted into weight readings. Force balance checkweighers offer higher accuracy and resolution and better resistance to vibrations. They are ideal for lighter products and faster line speeds.

Trend Control

Trend Control

The trend control function calculates the product mean weight and its deviation from the reference weight. This information can be used for feedback control of filling machines of powders, liquids, or other production lines, improving the efficiency of the filling process.

Performance Factors

Performance Factors

Conveyor length and line speed: Longer conveyors or slower line speed results in products taking more time being weighed. Product spacing: Insufficient spacing can cause two products to end up on the load cell together, causing incorrect reading. Product weight: Reading accuracy increases with heavier products.

Usage

Usage

  • Avoid over/underweight
  • Reduce giveaway
  • Comply with regulations
  • Grading
  • Collect line data
  • Counting/Missing
Combination Systems

Combination Systems

Back to back weighing and contaminant detection is possible with an SSV Checkweigher and M6 Metal Detector combination system. This is an optimal solution, especially for production lines in need of a small footprint unit. The unified interface gives one point to run HACCP checks and pull data. The metal detector is fully integrated with no additional boards to fail.

Application Examples

Application Examples

Food and pet food: Weighing of individual items before packaging; ensuring exact weight or count of packaged products; detecting missing packs in bags or cartons. Pharma, cosmetics, nutraceuticals: Weighing of individual tablets and capsules; detecting missing blister packs in cartons or missing cartons in cases. Industrial: Detecting leaks in pressurized aerosol canisters; detecting missing products in packages and cases.

X-Ray Inspection

How it Works

In an X-ray system, a tube on the upper side of the tunnel generates a short-wavelength radiation, which is detected by a sensor at the bottom. As a product passes through the beam, it absorbs more or less energy depending on its density. The detector converts the amount of energy that gets to the other side of the tunnel into a grayscale image, where products (or areas within products) with higher density will appear darker.

  • Relative Virtual Weight

    Relative Virtual Weight

With X-ray systems, it is possible to measure the weight of a product by comparing the shade density of an image with that of a reference master product. For example, if a product should have a thickness of 50mm, but its X-ray image is 10% lighter than the reference, it means it's actually 45mm thick and weighs 10% less.

  • Application Examples

    Application Examples

Virtual weighing ensures accurate measurements even with fast lines and narrow product spacing. It is ideal for classifying unstable products (e.g., frozen scallops) that might roll on the conveyor, which would typically cause a double product error on a checkweigher. Zone/region weighing refers to another application, where the quantity of single ingredients (e.g., lunch boxes) might be insufficient or in excess, even though the total package weight is correct.

  • Eliminate consumer complaints

    Eliminate consumer complaints

The virtual weight function adds to the other detection capabilities of our X-ray systems, allowing you to discover underweight products, foreign contaminants, and quality defects with just one passage through the inspection tunnel. An all-in-one solution to eliminate consumer complaints

X-Ray vs. Checkweigher

X-Ray vs. Checkweigher

Checkweighers and X-ray systems calculate weight in different ways. Checkweighers measure actual mass, while X-ray systems calculate virtual weight by comparing the density of a product with that of a known sample. Checkweighers are ideal for products that require high accuracy, or to detect missing products. X-ray systems are best used when checkweighers might give false readings, for example when insufficient product spacing causes double product error, or with composite products where the weight of each component must be verified separately.

Rejection

Our rejector systems add a further layer of automation and safety to in-line inspections. They remove faulty products at a speed of up to 250 items/min, preventing mistakes from operators, such as putting back defective products on the conveyor or placing them in the wrong rejection bin.

Type of Rejector

Type of Rejector

The right type of rejector will depend on different factors: Line speed, packaging type, size and weight of products, and production environment. Our extensive product lineup has the right rejector for any production environment.

Methods of Rejection

Methods of Rejection

There are three main types of rejection methods, each with different variants:

  • Push: Products are pushed sideways by a flipper-type arm or a gate. It's ideal in boxes and thick bags.
  • Drop: The conveyor drops down or flips up to remove products. It's ideal for smaller items in thin bags.
  • Sort: Fragile products that would be damaged if dropped are sorted horizontally on the conveyor.
CCP Kit

CCP Kit

All detection systems are connected to a dual rejector station equipped with a CCP (Critical Control Point) Kit. The kit consists of a reject verify sensor that validates that the package is actually off the line, and other sensors that alert when the bin is full or the air pressure is too low. Systems can be configured in order to move faulty products to different bins depending on the defect.

FAQ

Length of conveyor

Type of weighing system/technology being used by the inspection system

Length of the product being weighed

Processing speed of the production line

Product weight

Spacing between products being weighed

Checkweighers state a “Sigma” value 2σ or 3σ (3 sigma). That refers to the system’s ability to consistently weigh a product accurately. Put simply, if you were to weigh the same product over and over again, sigma represents how closely the weights are to one another. Lower sigma values means better checkweigher accuracy.

Chances are it will! Anritsu has the most compact footprint in the industry going as small as 545mm (21”).

Checkweighers determine actual product package weight and allows the user to reduce fill amount to absolute minimum while eliminating underweight products.

Up to 12, depending on application.
