V2X Wireless System Evaluation Solution

Many countries worldwide are focusing recent technical development activities on intelligent transport systems, and specifically, improving automobile safety. In fact, some leading car manufacturers have already started installing wireless vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications systems. Connecting transportation networks to each other and the broader internet makes roads safer, travel more efficient, reduces air pollution and improves driver experience, and V2X is expected to become commonplace soon in the near future. Current V2X development uses DSRC technology and the IEEE 802.11p (11p hereafter) standard. This represents the first wave of mainstream V2X deployment, with LTE and 5G coming later to enrich connectivity and add extra capability. Evaluating V2X Messages: One Issue in V2X System Development

Since the 11p technology is an upgrade based on the 11a/g technology standards used by WLAN, the methods for evaluating the performance of wireless devices (quality of RF Tx signal, Rx sensitivity) are similar to measurement of WLAN devices. In fact, RF test equipment based on WLAN test equipment and offering expanded support for the 11p technology is already commercially available. Consequently, it is not difficult for RF hardware engineers to configure a V2X test environment. On the other hand, what development environment do software engineers need? Actually, until now there has been no test equipment for accurate evaluation of data (messages) sent by 11p wireless devices. As a result, V2X system development software engineers implement tests between their own test equipment, incurring heavy workloads, such as collating bit strings and ASCII code. However, this method makes debugging difficult due to differences in interpreting standards and issues with testing between the same test equipment.

The "Plugfest" exhibition sponsored by V2X-related standards organizations offers companies a limited opportunity to confirm connectivity between trial V2X equipment over occasional 2- or 3-day periods, but subsequent debugging, improvements and connectivity re-testing to confirm normal operation of trial products still remains remarkably difficult to complete. The key issue at stake is generating an environment in which V2X messages can be compared and validated between devices.

Validating V2X Messages: Anritsu V2X Message Solution

As a result, V2X system software engineers can monitor whether the expected V2X messages sent via either ECU or CAN are reaching the vehicle.
