Management of Chemical Substances

The domestic group complies with laws and regulations such as the Act on the Assessment Releases of Specified Chemical Substances in the Environment and the Promotion of Management Improvement (PRTR Act), the Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Control Law, the Soil Contamination Countermeasures Act, the Industrial Safety and Health Act, the Fire Service Act, and related ordinances. Departments that handle chemical substances appoint the responsible persons for handling chemical substances, and are committed to preventing environmental pollution, ensuring safety, and disaster prevention.

Proper Handling of Chemical Substances

We manage chemical substances appropriately through our chemical substance management system. When handling new chemical substances, we are required to submit an application form indicating the product name, manufacturer name, application, handling amount, handling location, etc., as well as a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)*1 and, if necessary, a risk assessment implementation report to the Environmental Management Department in advance. Applied chemical substances are registered in the chemical substance management system after evaluation by experts in seven fields*2 and comprehensive evaluation by the environmental responsible person. The same procedure will be followed if there are any changes to the registered information. Even when handling registered chemical substances, the application and the latest SDS are required to be submitted, and the environmental management department will check and approve it.

*1 Documents that provide information on the physical and chemical properties, hazards, harmfulness, and handling of chemical substances

*2 Design for environmentally sensitive substances, environmental laws and regulations, disposal, safety and health, the Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Control Law, the High Pressure Gas Safety Act, the Fire Service Act

Inventory of Chemical Substances

Departments that handle chemical substances conduct inventory every three months and record the purchased amount, used amount, disposed amount, and held amount of the registered chemical substances in the chemical substance management system. The Environmental Management Department compiles the registered inventory results, calculates the values required for the PRTR Law, Fire Service Law, and greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1), and submits notifications to the authorities if necessary.

Prevention of Leakage

From the perspective of preventing contamination, health, and disaster prevention, we take thorough measures to prevent the leakage of chemical substances by preventing storage containers from tipping over, wearing protective gear, and keeping storage equipment locked. Departments that hold large amounts of chemical substances regularly conduct training to prevent leaks and to respond to emergencies, and review procedures as necessary.
