Anritsu Introduces 64G MUX/DEMUX Modules for MP1800A BERT to Meet High-speed Interconnect Design Requirements

Integrated Solution Supports Generation of NRZ Data and BER Measurements up to 64.2 Gbit/s to Accurately Evaluate SERDES, Other High-speed PHY Devices

With the release of its new MP1861A MUX and MP1862A DEMUX modules for the MP1800A Signal Quality Analyzer, Anritsu Corporation is strengthening the functions of its MP1800A 32G BERT to support 56G and 64G BER measurements required for evaluating high-speed serial transmission devices, such as SERDES. When used in conjunction with the MP1800A, these two new modules support generation of NRZ Data and BER measurements up to 64.2 Gbit/s. In addition, support for Jitter Tolerance and Bathtub Jitter measurements meets the recommendations of the latest CEI-56G and  400GbE standards.

These standards for new high-speed interfaces are currently being examined to help speed-up server and network instruments. PHY devices, such as SERDES, used as these high-speed interfaces use measurements such as BER, Jitter Tolerance, Bathtub Jitter, as key indices of signal integrity in evaluating higher speeds.

By strengthening the functions of its MP1800A series, Anritsu expects to play a major role in bringing higher speeds to server and network equipment.


[Development Background]

Traffic volumes at data centers are exploding due to the rapid spread of cloud computing services. To increase the transmission capacity between servers and network equipment, conversion to parallel lanes, increasing serial transmission speeds, and adoption of PAM transmission, are all being actively developed; IEEE is examining a switch from 100GbE to 400GbE, while the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) is examining new-high-speed interfaces, such as upgrading from CEI-28G to CEI-56G.

The above-described communications standards use high-speed serial transmission devices, such as SERDES, and optical transceiver modules. The BER, Rx Jitter Tolerance, and Tx Bathtub Jitter characteristics are key quality standards in assuring device design margins and compatible connectivity as speeds become faster, requiring development of measurement instruments supporting accurate measurements of these characteristics.

To meet these needs, Anritsu has developed the new MP1861A MUX and MP1862A DEMUX for its popular MP1800A series of signal quality analyzers used worldwide to support strengthened signal quality evaluations in the 56-Gbit/s band.


[Product Outline]

Anritsu’s MP1800A Signal Quality Analyzer series is a plug-in, modular-type Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT) simultaneously accommodating Pulse Pattern Generator (PPG), Error Detector (ED), synthesizer, and jitter generation modules. It supports simultaneous generation of synchronous signals and measurement of Bit Error Rates (BER) for up to 8ch by installing multiple 32G PPG and ED modules.

Combining the newly developed MP1861A 56/64 Gbit/s MUX with the 32G 2ch PPG option supports generation of NRZ Data signals at up to 64.2 Gbit/s. Similarly, combining the MP1862A 56/64 Gbit/s DEMUX with the 32G ED option supports reception and BER measurement of signals up to 64.2 Gbit/s. Expanding the 32G BERT to either 56G or 64G supports an easy switchover from 100GbE to 400GbE R&D. Additionally, joint use with the MP1800A series jitter generation modules supports generation of SJ with a maximum amplitude up to 0.55UI at a high 250-MHz jitter modulation frequency at up to 2000UI.  Dual Tone SJ (two different frequencies), RJ, BUJ and SSC, can also be injected independently and simultaneously. Moreover, Bathtub Jitter measurement at the DEMUX side is also possible while generating a jittered-Data signal from the MUX. This can be used to measure the Jitter Tolerance and Bathtub Jitter of high-speed serial transmission devices, such as SERDES, supporting CEI-56G and 400GbE with both high accuracy and sufficient margin.

The MP1861A MUX has low intrinsic jitter waveform of RJ = 200 fs rms (typ.) plus wide output over wide amplitude range up to 3.5 Vp-p; the MP1862A DEMUX has high input sensitivity of 25mV (typ., single-end, EYE Height) for high-accuracy measurement of semi-conductor chip characteristics.
