Passive Intermodulation (PIM) in In-building Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS)

As mobile operators upgrade existing in-building distributed antennna systems (DAS) to include LTE frequency bands, the probability of harmful passive intermodulation (PIM) increases. With low PIM components and careful construction techniques, operators are able to reduce interference caused by PIM and maximize site performance. Unlike impedance mismatches, which reduce signal level regardless of location, the nonlinearities that produce PIM have varying impact depending on where they are located in the network. This application note begins with a review of decibel math and insertion loss calculations, followed by a discussion of the impact of insertion loss on PIM performance in distributed antenna systems (DAS).

Why only one PIM standard in PIM Master accessory kits?

Only one PIM standard is required to calibrate the Distance-to-PIM (DTP) feature, and to verify that the PIM Master is operating properly. For this reason, Anritsu only supplies one 1775 MHz PIM standard with its 2000-1745-R and 2000-1746-R PIM Master accessory kits.

Testing Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS)

Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) are being installed in large numbers to support growing demand for in-building wireless services. Needs range from capacity enhancements for large stadiums to coverage enhancements inside office buildings, tunnels and subterranean areas not served by outdoor networks. DAS can be designed as “Passive” systems, using RF cable and dividers to distribute signals to remote antennas within the venue, or as “Active” systems that use optical fiber to distribute signals to remote amplifiers throughout the venue. Which solution to choose depends on many variables, including budget, objective (coverage or capacity), size of the building and number of operators that will be sharing the system.

Configuring the Anritsu PIM Master for Wireless Browser Control

Browser enabled remote control brings unsurpassed flexibility to the Anritsu PIM Master. It is now possible to control the PIM Master using a wide variety of web browsers running on Wi-Fi enabled devices. Since the control software is served by the instrument, it is no longer necessary to install and run application software on the controlling device. Rather, a customer’s existing web browsing software (Safari, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) can be used to control the PIM Master from a remote location. This flexibility makes remote control of the PIM Master more convenient for field personnel. This application note details the setup and use of the PIM Master MW82119A/B for browser based control.

Using Distance-to-PIM (DTP) and Distance-to-Fault (DTF) trace overlay to speed site repair

PIM Master Transmit Frequency Range

The MW82119A/B PIM Master from Anritsu is a family of high power, battery operated PIM test instruments designed for maximum portability. These instruments utilize a filter combiner to maximize RF efficiency and minimize battery consumption during use. The F1 and F2 frequency range for each analyzer has been designed to cover the maximum possible range of IM3 frequencies for that band. The fact that some frequencies in the downlink band are not able to be selected (guard band frequencies) has no impact on the instrument’s ability to test the full range of possible IM3 frequencies.
