MD8430A Signaling Tester Function Upgrade

LTE-Advanced Carrier Aggregation Function Tests Launch of MD8430A-085 Carrier Aggregation Option.

Anritsu Corporation (President Hirokazu Hashimoto) has announced the September 3 rollout of its world-leading MD8430A-085 Carrier Aggregation option for the popular MD8430A Signaling Tester, supporting LTE-AdvancedNote carrier aggregation*1 tests.

LTE-Advanced is the next-generation mobile communications standard offering faster speeds than today's LTE by using the carrier aggregation function.

Installing today's announced MD8430A-085 option in the MD8430A allows it to operate as an LTE-Advanced base station simulator supporting the coding/decoding*2,  protocol*3 and throughput performance tests*4 required by carrier aggregation function tests.

LTE-Advanced is currently being actively developed, targeted at early rollout of commercial services.

Anritsu has developed this world-first MD8430A-085 Carrier Aggregation option for its base station simulator to help bring LTE-Advanced terminals and chipsets to market as soon as possible.

Note: LTE-Advanced

LTE-Advanced is a next-generation mobile communications system offering even faster speeds than the LTE (Long Term Evolution) standard now being rolled-out worldwide. The 3GPP*5 international standards organization is currently finalizing the new standard.

[Development Background]

The spread of flat-rate data packet services and cloud computing*6 is driving rapid development of various LTE mobile terminals, including smartphones, netbooks and USB-type data appliances.

On the other hand, coping with the explosive growth of rich-content services like streaming video and graphics requires increases in both the speed and data capacity of mobile communication networks.

LTE-Advanced is being developed to solve these issues. Since it achieves faster data speeds by using the carrier aggregation technology, there is an urgent need for base station simulators supporting carrier aggregation tests.

To meet this need, Anritsu has developed the MD8430A-085 Carrier Aggregation option, strengthening the functions of its MD8430A Signaling Tester.

Using the MD8430A with this installed option supports the world's first LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation tests.

[Product Outline]

The MD8430A-085 Carrier Aggregation option is designed for installation in the MD8430A Signaling Tester. Using this option, the MD8430A gives engineers a bench-top test environment simulating an LTE-Advanced network supporting carrier aggregation coding/decoding, protocol, and throughput performance tests under a variety of test conditions, which can be difficult to configure using a live network.

[Target Markets and Applications]

■ Target markets: Makers of communications terminals and chipsets, telecom carriers, etc.

■ Applications: Carrier aggregation function tests of LTE-Advanced mobile terminals and chipsets

*1 Carrier Aggregation Function

Carrier aggregation is a technology using a combination of multiple allocated frequencies to create a bigger bandwidth (radio-wave frequency range) virtually. In wireless communications systems, the bigger the bandwidth, the more data can be transferred at high speed. For example, if a carrier has two bands of 20 and 10 MHz, by using carrier aggregation, the same data rate can be achieved as using a contiguous 30-MHz wide frequency band, increasing both peak and average speeds for subscribers.

*2 Coding/Decoding

The process for converting voice and text data, etc., into digital communications signals is called coding. The reverse process of returning encoded information into voice and text is called decoding.

*3 Protocol

Standards-defined communications procedure between mobile terminal and network

*4 Throughput

Data transmission speed per unit time. In the mobile communications field, this is expressed as the substantive data transfer speed between the base station and mobile.

*5 3GPP: 3rd Generation Partnership Project

International partnership project responsible for deciding third-generation mobile technology standards

*6 Cloud Computing

Name given to form of computing providing various communications services via wide area network. Mobile users connect to the Internet via high-speed wireless circuits where the network side offers enjoyment of varied and high-performance services.
