However, field testing in diverse combinations of terrain, population density, modes and routes of travel, and natural and constructed environments is extremely time-consuming and costly. The Azimuth Field-to-Lab (FTL) solution can change all that. The standard channel models often used for testing yield statistical representations of channel conditions that are useful in equipment testing, certification, and benchmarking. However, they don’t adequately capture the variable conditions experienced by mobile devices moving through the real world. The Azimuth Field-to-Lab solution easily integrates actual drive-test scan logs into the test-beds used in carrier and equipment vendors’ labs.

Key components of the FTL are AzMapper, AzPlayer, and the ACE MX MIMO Channel Emulator. To collect field data, the FTL solution integrates industry-standard and custom drive test software. Drive test data is converted into a playback file optimized for the test-bed, and is filtered to ensure realistic playback files optimized for the test-bed and to ensure realistic playback conditions. The data is then replayed on the channel emulator; a playback control tool configures the channel emulator and re-creates test environment conditions on the channel emulator.

Field Data Collection
Traditional drive tests are performed with commercial products that use real handsets and radios to collect raw data reflecting real-time field conditions. Azimuth FTL interfaces with a wide range of commercial scanners.

The raw data is fed into the AzMapper for postprocessing, which analyzes the information, extracts relevant data, smooths and optimizes the data for playback, and identifies missing segments and interpolates the gaps for continuity. All the parameters of the filtering and mapping are configurable.

The postprocessed data becomes the playback file that AzPlayer streams on the ACE Channel Emulator. Together, the ACE MX and AzPlayer support unlimited playback file size. With the easy-to-use playback control, the data can be replayed, paused, looped, and even coupled with other playback files using the graphic user interface or the programmable scripting interface.
