How do I get my MS2721B to use a manual ethernet address after I enter one?

After you enter the ethernet address you want to use (i.e. 10.0.0.2) you must restart the unit on a live ethernet connection. You can use the crossover cable to connect to your computer's ethernet port as a live port, but only if you are assigning an address. If you use the DHCP (dynamic host control protocol), you must hook to a live ethernet connection that allows for DHCP requests.

What detection methods are available on MS2721B Spectrum Master?

The available detection methods are Peak, RMS, Negative, Sample and Quasi-peak.

What kind of reference oscillator is used in the MS2721B Spectrum Master?

An oven controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO) is the reference oscillator that is used in the MS2721B.

Do we still need to buy Option 19 to use the MA24106A with the instrument?

Yes - you need Option 19 to use the MA24106A sensor with the Spectrum Master, VNA Master, BTS Master, and Economy Spectrum Analyzer (MS271xB). The software that is included with the purchase of the MA24106A is used to connect the sensor to a PC.

I want to copy several hundred measurements from my MS272xB or MT8222A internal memory to transfer them to a PC, what is the fastest way to do it?

The fastest way is to copy them all to a Compact Flash module and then copy them into your computer using a Compact Flash reader. We've found that the Sandisk Ultra II CF modules are about 3x faster then their slower brethren. If you don't have a CF reader, it may be worth the expense to buy one. You can use a USB memory stick, but they aren't as fast as CF. The fastest we've used is a Sandisk Titanium USB stick - but it is less than one-forth the speed of a fast CF module. USB sticks are slower than CF because of the parallel data architecture of CF compared to USB.

On the handheld spectrum analyzers in which the CW Generator option has been installed, can the CW Generator be set to a given frequency and have the signal continue to be generated while the spectrum analyzer is also being used?

No, the CW Generator cannot be used at the same time as the spectrum analyzer. The tracking generator can be used at the same time as the spectrum analyzer but not at a fixed frequency - the frequency of the tracking generator is the same as (tracks) the spectrum analyzer frequency.

In the MS272xB trace menu, what is the purpose of minimum hold?

Minimum hold is very handy when looking for signals near the noise floor. A discrete signal will stay put while the surrounding noise level will drop as every display point shows the smallest level that was detected. The displayed noise can drop more than 10 dB after a few sweeps.

When I change the RBW or add input attenuation on my spectrum analyzer, the noise floor changes. Why?

The noise floor is caused by thermal noise generated in the instrument's circuits. When you select a wider resolution bandwidth, more noise comes through the filter and causes the noise floor to rise. When you add an internal input attenuator, modern instruments respond by increasing IF gain to maintain a constant reference level. The increased gain causes the noise floor to rise by an amount equal to the added attenuation.

What is the difference between a normal marker and a counter marker on the MS272xB and MT8222A?

There are 551 display points across the screen. During the normal course of measurements there are several measurements taken at differing frequencies for each display point. When a normal marker is being used the frequency at the center of each display point is shown. When counter marker is selected the frequency at which the instrument was tuned when it made the largest measurement is displayed.

How do I calculate Noise Power density (dBm/Hz) from a measurement made with the MS2711D or MS272x spectrum analyzer?

On the instrument, use a Noise Marker.  If you have a captured trace (in dBm) that you want to convert to dBm/Hz, use the following formula:  dBm/Hz = dBm - 10 * log(1.03 * RBW)

Can I use the C/I (carrier to interference ratio) to make SINAD measurements on a narrow-band FM signal?

No, the C/I measurement is intended for use when measuring Wi-Fi (802.11b,g and a) signals. The measurement makes certain assumptions about the nature of the Wi-Fi signal being measured and how it is affected by various types of interferers.

Can the MS272xB spectrum analyzers do a G/T measurement? We want to determine the ratio between a CW pilot carrier from the satellite and the noise coming from deep space.

To do this measurement first measure the satellite carrier power. Using a marker, capture the peak of the CW signal to get that power level. Then turn the receiving dish a few degrees so it is aimed at deep space and measure the background noise level. We suggest using a fixed reference marker set at the peak of the CW carrier and a delta marker at the same frequency set to be a noise marker. By doing this, the delta marker value is in dB/Hz relative to the CW signal and once the receiving antenna is turned to deep space the answer can be read directly from the delta marker value.

My MS2721B has a fully charged battery. When I unplug it from the AC/DC adapter it still shows the AC/DC icon. Is this normal?

The battery has internal circuitry that communicates with the main board on the Spectrum Master. Either the battery is defective or something in the Spectrum Master is failing to communicate.  Please contact your local service center to have this issue resolved.

I am writing a control program to work with my MS2721B. The quasi-peak command does not exist in the Programming Manual, nor can I retrieve it when I query using the :sens:det:func. Is this command available?

As of June 2009 the Remote commands for Quasi-Peak detection are being developed. They are not currently available. Expected date for these commands does not have an official target but we hope to have them by end of August, 2009.

Are Anritsu PC applications for downloading files from the Site Master supported on 64 bit Windows OS's?

Currently Anritsu does not but is working diligently to provide a solution.

How can I get Marker one to be fixed and have the Delta marker be variable on the same frequency?

After you set the MS2721B to the desired center frequency, make sure you don’t have any attenuation set on input port.   Turn Marker one on. Select Peak Search. More Under Marker Style or Fixed Marker turn to fixed or on. Back Turn Delta ON for the marker one.   You can change now the RF input level and will have the Delta value.

What methodolgy is used to derive GPS data for the Master products?

The GPS coordinates delivered by the instruments are based on the WGS-84 methodology of determining position.

What are the specs for the adapter 1091-81-R

Max. VSWR  DC – 18 Ghz 1.06 + .005 fGhz Adapter, DC to 18 GHz, 50 Ohm, N(f)-SMA(f)

Does the MS2721B support CDMA 450MHz band?

Yes it is supported.  You can enter the frequency or you can select the signal standard and enter the channel number.  Here are the signal standards: CDMA2000 Class 5 (NMT-450-20 kHz)- Uplink CDMA2000 Class 5 (NMT-450-20 kHz)- Downlink CDMA2000 Class 5 (NMT-450-25 kHz)- Uplink CDMA2000 Class 5 (NMT-450-25 kHz)- Downlink

Will an MS2721B with options 078 and 009 DVB-T functions work on COFDM DVB-T 6 MHz signal transmission in USA?

Option 78 provides SFN measurements on a DVB-T/H SFN network to measure multi-path related issues. For modulation analysis and RF measurements, Option 64 is required, which does support 6 MHz DVB-T bandwidth. We've only heard of some trial DVB networks in the US which are no longer operational. However, please note that ATSC is the digital broadcast standard in the US.
