CapVNA for Lightning VNAs

Capture VNA is a Windows program to capture, display, save, and print the graphical and text data from Anritsu's VNAs. The displayed data can be loaded from a floppy disk where it was previously saved at the VNA or captured directly from the VNA over the GPIB port. The displayed data can be saved in a variety of formats (bitmap, S2p, text, etc.) to the PC's internal disk drive or a network drive and printed to a local or network printer (including color). Can I measure non-50 ohm devices with my Scorpion?

Yes, the MS462XX (Scorpion) has an Arbitrary Impedance function. While the Scorpion is a 50 ohm analyzer, it does have the capability of extracting data mathematically for non-50 ohm devices. The Impedance Configuration Menu is located under the CONFIG menu key. The practical limitation for this function is 2 to 2000 ohm devices. See the Arbitrary Impedance application note for more details.

When calibrating for a noise figure measurement, what is the maximum loss before the DUT that I can have (cables, probe tips, etc)?

The net Excess Noise Ratio (ENR) should not fall below 5dB. The net ENR is calculated as the Noise Source ENR minus any loss after the Noise Source. For example, if you are using a 14 dB ENR noise source, the residual noise should not exceed 9 dB for calibration. This includes the loss before and after the DUT. For high gain devices it may be necessary to add attenuation after the DUT. This can be done after the calibration, and the additional attenuation can be entered as loss after the DUT.

What is a sliding load?

The sliding load (or sliding termination) was developed because it is not possible to make a broad band termination with calibration standard return loss requirements across a wide frequency range. In essence it is used to generate a series of equal mismatches whose mechanical position and resultant phase shifts are used to subtend a circle near the center of the Smith chart. From that circle the exact center of the Smith chart can be determined from the perpendicular bi - sector of the chords (six mechanical locations). This calculation is transparent to the user.

How do I use a sliding load?

The first step in using the sliding load is to check and adjust, if necessary, the width of the pin depth gauge. Then the pin depth of the sliding load must be set to minus .0002 This pin gap insures that the shoulders of the male and female connectors are sufficiently spaced so as not to meet, yet they are close enough that the characteristic impedance at the interface is not adversely affected. After the pin gap is set, the sliding load must be mated to the test port of the VNA when prompted by the analyzer during calibration. Always position the slider as close to the test port as possible when making connection. This will aid in centering the pin. It is easier to mate the connectors when they are in the vertical plain, again to make it easier to align the two connectors. Gently tap the shaft of the sliding load if the center conductor is obviously misaligned. When visually centered, carefully mate the sliding load to the test port connector. The Anritsu VNA will prompt the user through all the steps to accomplish a sliding load calibration. When prompted, insert the fixed load, this termination sets the characteristic impedance for frequencies below 2 GHz.

The AutoCal modules are automatic precision calibrators that provide fast, repeatable, and accurate coaxial calibrations up to 9 GHz.
