We are planning to commercialize IoT devices with more kinds of wireless telecommunication functions to expand our product portfolio. What do our QA engineers have to do to assure wireless communications quality?
Evaluating the wireless quality of IoT devices requires testing finished products by simulating an actual usage environment. The actual tests differ per the communication standards, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth®, 4G (LTE), 5G, and others, but there are mainly RF parametric and legal compliance tests.
What are the special requirements for RF parametric tests of 4G and 5G NR (New Radio) IoT devices? Additionally, what should we consider when testing 5G NR mmWave band (FR2) which we are considering for future development?
Let’s use 5G NR IoT devices as an example. On RF parametric tests, you need to evaluate the 5G NR device performance, such as the TRx characteristics and power, by confirming the status of the connection condition between the antenna on 5G NR devices and base station. For LTE, the test items are basically the same as 5G NR, but there are some key differences with the mmWave (FR2) frequency band, requiring an OTA test environment.
How should we confirm compliance with specifications?
The Radio communications standards for each cellular technology are designed by 3GPP. You can confirm whether the 5G NR device performance meets the 3GPP standards by using Anritsu’s Radio Communication Test Station MT8000A.
