Broadband Battle Heats Up

The broadband battle between carriers and cable companies has never been hotter. While cable companies enjoyed an early advantage, telcos seem to be making inroads by bundling services and partnering with DBS companies.

In fact, in the recently completed quarter, U.S. phone companies signed a few more high-speed data subscribers than cable companies, according to research compiled by Cable Digital News. It was a small victory • 1.17 million new subscribers for the telcos compared to the 1.07 million for the largest MSOs • but it was the seventh quarter in the past nine in which the phone companies came out on top.

Now, the telcos have a lot of making up to do. Based on the Cable Digital News data, cable companies had 27 million subscribers, nearly 56% of the market, compared to the carriers' slightly more than 21 million subscribers, or 44 % of the market.

Of course, the broadband story has a wireless chapter as well. MobileTV was a hot topic at the recently-completed CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment show. There's little doubt that the continued evolution into 4G will accommodate video and other broadband services.

Anritsu Company is working with all of the major telcos, carriers, and cable companies, providing test solutions that stretch from the development stage through deployment, all the way to the curb. This issue focuses on solutions for some of those technologies, including IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), WiMAX, HSDPA, and FTTx.
