Site Master S400A User Guide

The operation of the Site Master is straightforward and intuitive. However, you may find it helpful to review the operation of the keys and menus prior to first-time use. Descriptions of the keys and menus are provided in Chapter 2; measurement procedures are found in Chapter 3. First-time users and maintenance supervisors will benefit from perusing the material in Chapter 1. This chapter describes the instrument and provides listings of options, accessories, and performance specifications.

Note: Master Software Tools (MST) now works on Site Master S311D, S331D, S312D, S332D and Cell Master MT8212B. We strongly recommend users to migrate to MST. This platform has numerous productivity advantages over the HHST and all future product enhancements will be done via MST. Visit the Master Software Tools (MST) Home Page for more information.

Why doesn't my USB to Serial adapter work?

The Sitemaster and the Handheld Software Tools program (HHST) will work with almost any commercially available USB to Serial adapter. If you don't have one yet, you can order one from us (P/N 551-1691) or pick one up from almost any electronics parts store (Fry's, Radio Shack, etc). You will have to install the drivers that come with the device and then go into control panel on your PC and manually set the Com port to Com 1 through Com 6, as these are the only ports our program will operate on. In Windows XP, you can do this by going to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Ports, Communications Port, Port Settings, Advanced, then click on the Com port pull-down; and it will show you which Com ports are in use on your machine. Set it to an unused port number 1 through 5. Then check the Com port settings in our program under Settings/Communication. It should match the port you have selected in Control Panel. Set the baud rate to 38,400 as this is the common rate limitation of most USB to serial adapters. After you get your setup working, you can experiment with higher baud rates if you wish. Note that newer units such as the D models can support higher transfer speeds than the older A and B models. You should also be using the latest version of Handheld Software Tools, which can be found by entering the term HHST in the search box on our website ( Sometimes it is useful to perform a Factory Default reset on the Sitemaster after trying unsuccessfully to communicate wit h it. This can be done by holding the Escape key in the upper righthand corner of the keypad while pressing the On/Off switch to turn the unit on. This will reset the unit but not affect any of the saved sweeps on it or the memory in any way. It simply helps to "clear the cobwebs" out of the unit.

Why does it look like a short is occurring in my Antenna when I'm doing a DTF?

When doing a DTF, the unit is still calibrated to a particular frequency range, to check the frequency range that you are calibrated for: 1. Press the "Mode" Hard Key 2. Select "DTF" 3. Press the "DTF Aid" soft key 4. Look at F1 and F2, they represent the currently calibrated range of the unit. 5. If F1 and F2 are outside the frequency band of the antenna, it will look like a short, change the frequency range to the range of the antenna.

I am trying to place my marker on a specific frequency, but the marker only allows me to go to a specified frequency (ie: I want to place it on 1950.3, but the marker jumps to 1949.xx or 1950.9x). Why does it do this?

Based on the resolution chosen, there are a discrete number of data points that are created and displayed on the graph. The markers can only fall on one of these discrete points in the graph. To find out the frequency spacing of the points from F1, use the following equation: (F2-F1)/# of points.

How do you determine if my Site Master adapters are working properly?

1. You can use Site Master to verify your adapters. The User's Guides of all of our Site Masters have a procedure for Return Loss Measurements. 2. When you measure the return loss of your adapter after an Open Short Load (OSL) calibration, please pay attention to the frequency range of the termination (load) used. For example, 7/16 load works to 8 GHz, SM/PL works to 4 GHz, 28N50-2 works to 18 GHz. 3. Adding another adapter between the adapter under test and the load will degrade the measurement of the return loss of the adapter under test. Plus if one adapter is really bad, you won't know which one is the culprit. 4. Perform the OSL calibration at the Site Master test port. The OSL calibration needs to be performed at the same place you will be connecting the adapter to be tested. Then attach an appropriate load. You are now measuring the return loss of the adapter. 5. Ultimately you have to have known good terminations and a known good Site Master to be able to perform these measurements. If you have more than one unknown, then it becomes very difficult to tell where the problem is. Anritsu offers calibration services for Site Master and also for the loads as well as some of the adapters. If you still are having problems, please consider sending your equipment in for calibration.

What are the Universal Serial Bus(USB) to Serial Adapter data rate transmission limitations?

The following limitation exists for most commonly used USB to Serial Adapters: The baud rate only goes from 9600 - 38400 kbs.

Can I use the InstaCal I got with my new S331C on my S331B? How about my S114C?

Your InstaCal module can be used on any S11xC, S33xC, or later models. InstaCal will not work on the older "B" models or on the S251C.
