All the Site Master, Cell Master and Spectrum Master Products (excluding MS2721A) include an RS-232 serial port. Most of the new lap top computers available in today's market do not feature an RS-232 serial port but feature a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port instead. To address this issue, a USB to Serial adapter can be used. It is important to note that the adapter can not be used to communicate with the Handheld Code Loader software and can only be used to communicate with the Anritsu Handheld Software Tools (Version 6.49 or above) to download and upload traces. Most of the USB to Serial adapters available today in the market will work, provided the computer uses an operating system that supports USB interfaces and that Handheld Software Tools (Version 6.49 or above) is used. The Sitemaster and the Handheld Software Tools program (HHST) will work with almost any commercially available USB to Serial adapter. If you don't have one yet, you can order one from us (P/N 551-1691) or pick one up from almost any electronics parts store (Fry's, Radio Shack, etc). You will have to install the drivers that come with the device and then go into control panel on your PC and manually set the Com port to Com 1 through Com 6, as these are the only ports our program will operate on. In Windows XP, you can do this by going to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Ports, Communications Port, Port Settings, Advanced, then click on the Com port pull-down; and it will show you which Com ports are in use on your machine. Set it to an unused port number 1 through 5. Then check the Com port settings in our program under Settings/Communication. It should match the port you have selected in Control Panel. Set the baud rate to 38,400 as this is the common rate limitation of most USB to serial adapters. After you get your setup working, you can experiment with higher baud rates if you wish. Note that newer units such as the D models can support higher transfer speeds than the older A and B models. You should also be using the latest version of Handheld Software Tools, which can be found by entering the term HHST in the search box on our website (www.us.anritsu.com). Sometimes it is useful to perform a Factory Default reset on the Sitemaster after trying unsuccessfully to communicate wit h it. This can be done by holding the Escape key in the upper righthand corner of the keypad while pressing the On/Off switch to turn the unit on. This will reset the unit but not affect any of the saved sweeps on it or the memory in any way. It simply helps to "clear the cobwebs" out of the unit.
Based on the resolution chosen, there are a discrete number of data points that are created and displayed on the graph. The markers can only fall on one of these discrete points in the graph. To find out the frequency spacing of the points from F1, use the following equation: (F2-F1)/# of points.
When doing a DTF, the unit is still calibrated to a particular frequency range, to check the frequency range that you are calibrated for: 1. Press the "Mode" Hard Key 2. Select "DTF" 3. Press the "DTF Aid" soft key 4. Look at F1 and F2, they represent the currently calibrated range of the unit. 5. If F1 and F2 are outside the frequency band of the antenna, it will look like a short, change the frequency range to the range of the antenna.

Yes, by using the optional Battery Charger (2000-1029). The charger has two slots which can be populated with the Site Master battery (removed from the instrument) and the spare battery. The batteries will be charged sequentially. The battery charging procedure is outlined in the User's Guide.

In HHST go to File>Database>Select the data base you want to open. This will open a window called Site Master Database showing pointing to your database. Display records 1 at a time or display all depending on the version of HHST you are using. Save each record as a .DAT trace file one at a time.

Using HHST (handheld software tools) select FILE -> Database. A window will pop up called "Select a Database" and from there you can either create a new database or open an existing one. Click on "Open a Database" and then click on "OK". In the window that pops up navigate to the location where the database is stored on your hard drive. Select it and then click "Open". You may get an error Number 5 and if so hit "OK" to ignore this error message. In the HHST screen you should see the "Site Master Database" window showing the traces saved in the database just opened. Note that you may need to click on the "Site Master Database" icon in the Windows Taskbar before the window is displayed.

A return loss measurement is like using a SWR meter, it is a quick pass/fail type of measurement. DTF is used to identify where a problem occurs, your knowledge of the installation will indicate the type of problem. For example, a large spike in the middle of a main feed line indicates a problem. In some areas of the USA, cables make excellent target practice and bullet holes are common. A large spike typically indicates an open or short of some type. Somewhere in the middle, a crushed cable, ignoring the antenna. One thing, on long cable runs, you can use either VSWR or RL in DTF. For short cable runs, like jumpers, VSWR sometimes makes it easier to interpret the display.
Software Tools provides several methods of exporting a graph for use in other applications. The Copy and Paste method will work for all MS Windows compatible programs. In addition, the File, Export function can save your Graph in a Windows Meta File format .WMF or to Text. The text file contains the data behind the graph for import into any spreadsheet.
