What are the available CDMA PN Search options for the BTS Master?

The BTS Master has two PN Search options; Auto and Manual.  When the auto option is selected, the BTS Master will display the 9 strongest PNs available.  When manual option is selected the user can search for a specific PN.  The BTS Master will only display the information for that PN.

Are CDMA measurements supported in the Anritsu BTS Master?

Yes, CDMA measurements are supported in the BTS Master MT8222A as well as the Cell Master MT8212B.  Additionally both platforms also support EVDO measurements.

What is max input power for the BTS Master internal power meter?

The max power input to the BTS Master internal power meter is +30 dBm.

Do I need to order option 9 (IQ Demodulation Hardware) for the BTS Master (MT8222A)?

No, option 9 is not available as an orderable option since the IQ Demodulation Hardware comes standard with the MT8222A BTS Master.

Do we support Mobile WiMAX on Handheld products?

Yes. Mobile WiMax is now available as Options on our MT8222A BTS Master as well as the MS2721B, MS2723B, and MS2724B Spectrum Masters.

Do you have any products that can do spectrum analysis, vector network analysis and WCDMA demodulation?

Yes, the product is called the BTS Master and more information about it can be found on our website.

How many scrambling codes are detected by the MT8222A Over the Air measurement?

The MT8222A OTA measurement displays the 6 strongest scrambling codes in the location of interest.

Does the MT8222A BTS Master support LTE measurements?

The BTS Master does not currently support LTE.  There is a plan, however, to add this functionality in the future.

When I use my MT8222A and I make a return loss measurement can I convert my graph into actual data that I can look at?

Yes, using Master Software Tools the graphs can be converted to output actual raw data. Use CSV export option to do this.

Can I use the Anritsu BTS Master MT8222A as a test instrument for calibration and maintenance of my Motorola CDMA Base Station using the Motorola Local Maintenance Facility (WinLMF)?

Yes, the BTS Master MT8222A version V1.48 onwards can be controlled using LMF software version 2.20 and up. To use a BTS Master with LMF, open LMF and click on the Tools menu, then on the Option menu item. In the LMF Options window, click on the Test Equipment Tab and select the Network Connection Type. Select Agilent E7495 and then connect.  The Anritsu BTS Master will emulate the communication of the Agilent E7495.  This particular implementation is supported by Anritsu, not Motorola.  For any questions or issues related to this interface, please contact Anritsu at 1-800-ANRITSU.

Can the MT8222A BTS Master meet the 3GPP frequency error specification of 50 ppb?

Yes, by using our GPS receiver option (MT8222A-031), with GPS receiver active the MT8222A has a 25 ppb frequency error accuracy, twice as good as the 3GPP specification. The unit also offers an automatic holdover mode if the GPS antenna is disconnected, and will maintain a 50 ppb frequency error accuracy for up to 72 hours, even if the unit is turned off.

Why can I not connect to my MT8222A using the USB to mini USB cable?

Please ensure that the instrument's firmware is at the latest revision.

On the PC side, sometimes when installing the 2 drivers that are required for the USB connectivity, they do not get installed properly and reinstalling will not work.

In this case, go to: Control Panel > System > Device Manager (this is under hardware on XP operating systems). 

  • Open the other devices
  • If you see 2 devices highlighted in yellow, these are the 2 drivers that did not install properly.
  • Highlight each, right click and uninstall both.
  • Unplug the USB connection from your PC.
  • Scroll down and click on Anritsu USB Driver and run.
  • Click on new hardware found pop-up and follow on screen instructions, installing 2 drivers.

This should correct the original corrupted driver install.

Will an MS2721B with options 078 and 009 DVB-T functions work on COFDM DVB-T 6 MHz signal transmission in USA?

Option 78 provides SFN measurements on a DVB-T/H SFN network to measure multi-path related issues. For modulation analysis and RF measurements, Option 64 is required, which does support 6 MHz DVB-T bandwidth. We've only heard of some trial DVB networks in the US which are no longer operational. However, please note that ATSC is the digital broadcast standard in the US.

I want to copy several hundred measurements from my MS272xB or MT8222A internal memory to transfer them to a PC, what is the fastest way to do it?

The fastest way is to copy them all to a Compact Flash module and then copy them into your computer using a Compact Flash reader. We've found that the Sandisk Ultra II CF modules are about 3x faster then their slower brethren. If you don't have a CF reader, it may be worth the expense to buy one. You can use a USB memory stick, but they aren't as fast as CF. The fastest we've used is a Sandisk Titanium USB stick - but it is less than one-forth the speed of a fast CF module. USB sticks are slower than CF because of the parallel data architecture of CF compared to USB.

What is the difference between a normal marker and a counter marker on the MS272xB and MT8222A?

There are 551 display points across the screen. During the normal course of measurements there are several measurements taken at differing frequencies for each display point. When a normal marker is being used the frequency at the center of each display point is shown. When counter marker is selected the frequency at which the instrument was tuned when it made the largest measurement is displayed.

Do we still need to buy Option 19 to use the MA24106A with the instrument?

Yes - you need Option 19 to use the MA24106A sensor with the Spectrum Master, VNA Master, BTS Master, and Economy Spectrum Analyzer (MS271xB). The software that is included with the purchase of the MA24106A is used to connect the sensor to a PC.

On my MS272XB how do I determine if a signal I see on the screen is real one, or a spurious response?

An internally generated spurious signal will be at a fixed frequency. Put a marker on the signal and center the signal on the display by using "Marker Freq to Center". Zoom in on the signal by reducing the span. If the span was very wide to begin with, you may need to recenter the signal once when the span becomes significantly narrower. An internally generated spurious signal will stay centered on the display as the span becomes very narrow because it is tied to the instrument's reference oscillator frequency.

I'm unable to remove the battery cover on my MS272xB or MT8222A. What should I do?

Sometimes the covers are difficult to remove for the first time. Insert a flat-blade screwdriver to the gap between the cover and the case and slightly rotate the screwdriver to pop off the cover. You should only have to do this once.

Can I use a MS272XB spectrum analyzer to measure noise figure?

Yes, with limitations. A spectrum analyzer can be used to measure the noise figure of a device with a significant amount of gain. The basic method is to start by measuring the noise floor of the instrument with a termination on the input. It is best to do this with attenuation set to 0 dB and the preamplifier turned on with a high averaging value (say, 100 or more). Turn on a marker along with a delta marker and set the marker type to FIXED. Next, connect the ampifier to be measured to the spectrum analyzer's input and move the termination to the input of the amplifier. Restart averaging and wait for the averaging to complete. The delta marker value will be the noise figure of the DUT plus the spectrum analyzer's noise figure divided by the gain of the amplifier. This method isn't suitable for low gain devices because of the "second stage contribution" of the spectrum analyzer.

Does the GPS receiver in the MS272xB and MT8222A with Option 31 use WAAS to enhance accuracy?

No, the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is a navigation aid intended to let aircraft rely on GPS for all phases of flight, including precision airport approaches. Since determinng the location of a base station generally doesn't require that level of precision WAAS is not used.
