World First Evaluation of Next-Generation HSPA Evolution Mobiles – MX848001E-18 DB-DC (Different Bands for Dual Cell) HSDPA (Release 9) Option

Anritsu Corporation (President Hirokazu Hashimoto) today announced the 21 December launch of its new MX848001E-18 DB-DC-HSDPA software option for the company's popular MD8480C W-CDMA Signaling Tester as a world first in supporting next-generation HSPA Evolution*1 mobiles and chipsets offering maximum data transfer speeds of 42 Mbps*2 over different frequency bands. 

Installing the MX848001E-18 in the MD8480C with HSPA Evolution configuration supports the DB-DC-HSDPA function for increasing the HSPA Evolution data communications speed to 42 Mbps over different frequency bands. The MD8480C operates as a base station simulator for testing next-generation HSPA Evolution mobile connectivity and evaluating throughput performance. 

The 3GPP*3 HSPA Evolution standard supports the above-described DB-DC-HSDPA function now being deployed commercially by many overseas carriers. 

With this new launch, Anritsu is the first measuring instrument maker to support evaluation of terminals and chipsets with the built-in DB-DC-HSDPA function and the company expects this software to help promote the rollout of broadband mobile networks worldwide. 

[Development Background]

The explosive growth of the smartphone and tablet markets is accelerating with the worldwide rollout of mobile broadband. To meet this demand, overseas carriers currently offering HSPA services are pushing ahead with deployment of next-generation HSPA Evolution technology supporting data transfer speeds at up to 42 Mbps. To support this trend, Anritsu launched its DC-HSDPA*4 measurement function in January 2010. The DC-HSDPA function standardized by 3GPP Release 8*5 is a technology offering data speeds up to 42 Mbps using the same frequency band. Subsequently, Release 9*6 standardized data transfers over different frequency bands as requested by carriers.

In response to these changes, Anritsu is strengthening the functions of its MD8480C W-CDMA Signaling Tester by offering base station simulation functions supporting HSPA Evolution and earlier mobile terminals and chipsets as the world's first test platform for evaluating speeds up to 42 Mbps over different frequency bands.

[Product Outline]

The MX848001E-18 DB-DC-HSDPA option is a software application for the MD8480C W-CDMA Signaling Tester. It supports the DB-DC-HSDPA function standardized by 3GPP Release 9 when installed in the MD8480C main frame in which the HSPA Evolution hardware and software have already been installed. It supports tests of HSPA Evolution over-the-air connections offering data transfer speeds of up to 42 Mbps using a combination of different frequency bands, making it the ideal tool for mobile terminal and chipset network connectivity tests and throughput performance evaluations. 

MD8480C W-CDMA Signaling Tester

The MD8480C is a base station simulator operating like HSPA, W-CDMA, GSM, etc., mobile base stations in countries worldwide. It can be used to freely define protocol sequences and set parameters used at handshaking between mobiles and base stations. In addition to handling normal procedures defined in the 3GPP standards, it can also generate operations under a variety of quasi-normal and abnormal conditions to test and troubleshoot problems that are hard to evaluate at communications with a real base station on a live network.

The DC-HSDPA standard almost doubles the data communications speed of HSDPA/HSUPA (HSPA) Evolution mobile phone systems by supporting DL speeds of 42 Mbps

3GPP standards have an appended number indicating the release version. Release 8 standardizes faster packet communications speeds such as 64QAM and MIMO as well as DC-HSDPA.

3GPP standards have an appended number indicating the release version. Release 9 standardizes DC-HSDPA+MIMO and DC-HSUPA with faster packet speeds than DB-DC-HSDPA.
