Launch of MS2830A-066 Low Phase Noise Performance Option

Anritsu Corporation (President Hirokazu Hashimoto) announced the August 27 launch of its new MS2830A-066 Low Phase Noise Performance hardware option for upgrading the functions of its popular MS2830A Signal Analyzer by reducing the phase noise*1 of the MS2830A-040/041/043 models.

Installing the MS2830A-066 option in the MS2830A-040/041/043 models improves the phase noise performance by up to –122 dBc/Hz*2  (220 MHz*3 center frequency*4 and 25 kHz*5 offset frequency*6,)or –118 dBc/Hz (500 MHz center frequency and 10 kHz offset frequency), supporting the phase noise performance required for evaluating nearby spurious*7 and adjacent channel leakage power*8 of narrowband land mobile radio systems in the bandwidth*9 from several kHz to 20 or 30 kHz. 

These evaluations usually use expensive measuring instruments, but the MS2830A with this Low Phase Noise Performance option can be purchased with much lower cost.

Land mobile radio systems are used by a variety of organizations and business, such as emergency services, taxis, etc., and there is increasing need for new measuring instruments supporting the conversion to digital signals and frequency reallocation.

By supporting low phase noise measurement for the MS2830A, Anritsu expects to help the smooth rollout of more land mobile radio systems.

 

[Development Background]

Evaluation of wireless communications equipment used by land mobile radio systems measures nearby spurious and adjacent channel leakage power to prevent interference with nearby communications channels.

However, it can be difficult to obtain accurate measurements if the phase noise of the measuring instrument itself is larger than the spurious and adjacent channel leakage power of the target signal.

As a result, phase noise performance is an important parameter for instruments used for these types of applications. Conventional instruments with the phase noise performance required for evaluating narrowband land mobile radio equipment tend be very expensive, so there is increasing demand for a low-cost solution.

Anritsu developed this new MS2830A-066 Low Phase Noise Performance hardware option for its popular MS2830A Signal Analyzer to meet this demand.

 

[Product Outline]

The MS2830A Signal Analyzer is targeted at R&D and manufacturing of various wireless communications appliances and electronic devices. The series has a lineup for five models each supporting a different upper frequency: the MS2830A-040 supporting 3.6 GHz*10, the MS2830A-041 at 6 GHz, the MS2830A-043 at 13.5 GHz, the MS2830A-044 at 26.5 GHz, and the MS2830A-045 at 43 GHz.

The released MS2830A-066 Low Phase Noise Performance hardware is for the MS2830A-040/041/043 models. Installing it in the MS2830A-040/041/043 supports the phase noise performance required for evaluating nearby spurious and adjacent channel leakage power of narrowband land mobile radio systems in the band from several kHz to 20 or 30 kHz as the ideal low-cost measurement solution.

[MS2830A Signal Analyzer]

The MS2830A is a low-cost signal analyzer with fast measurement speed and high accuracy. It can be custom configured ranging from a base model with only spectrum analyzer functions to an all-in-one total measurement solution for TRx tests.

Customers can choose from any of five models each supporting a different upper frequency: the MS2830A-040 supporting 3.6 GHz, the MS2830A-041 at 6 GHz, the MS2830A-043 at 13.5 GHz, the MS2830A-044 at 26.5 GHz, and the MS2830A-045 at 43 GHz.

An optional vector signal generator can be installed in the MS2830A-040/041/043 models for all-in-one evaluation of TRx performance characteristics.

The MS2830A-044/045 support measurements up to 26 GHz as required by the new spurious method*11. The upper frequency can be extended to 110 GHz by combination with an external mixer for future-proof R&D of next-generation wireless communications systems.

[Terminology] 

*1 Phase Noise

  Due to the principle of signal generation, there is always unwanted energy (phase noise) near the output

  frequency of the oscillator.

*2 dBc/Hz

  Unit of phase noise expressed as the ratio of the noise to the carrier converted to 1 Hz units.

*3 MHz (megahertz)

  Unit of frequency meaning oscillation at 106 cycles per second

*4 Center Frequency

  Frequency of measured signal

*5 kHz (kilohertz)

  Unit of frequency meaning oscillation at 103 cycles per second

*6 Offset Frequency

  Value indicating degree to which frequency separated from required frequency

  Unwanted signal cased by distortion and interference between channels; at design, frequency components

*8 Adjacent Channel Leakage Power

  In wireless systems, a signal should be contained within one channel but due to output amplifier distortion,

  sometimes the wireless signal is not contained within one channel and leaks into adjacent channels. The

  power of the leaking signal in adjacent channels is called adjacent channel leakage power.

*11 New Spurious Method

  ITU-T regulates the permitted level of spurious emissions. In the New Spurious Method, ITU-T has modified

  the upper frequency of the spurious emissions test, requiring a measuring instrument upgrade.
