Testing LTE Smartphone and Mobile Terminal IMS/ETWS Service Functions

Anritsu Corporation (President Hirokazu Hashimoto) has announced the rollout of two new software options for its popular MD8475A Signalling Tester, adding IMS/ETWS service function tests for LTE smartphones and mobile terminals by upgrading the functions of the MX847570A SmartStudio package and releasing the new MX847570A-080 Extended CSCF option.

The MD8475A Signalling Tester is a base station simulator incorporating hardware and software supporting various mobile communications technologies, including LTE, W-CDMA, etc. The MX847570A SmartStudio software for the MD8475A offers an easy-to-use GUI*1 for setting parameters for each communications test.

With this new rollout, Anritsu has strengthened the functions of the MX847570A by adding the CSCF Server*2 function for controlling IMS services such as VoLTE*3 and SMS over IMS*4, as well as the Public Warning Service Center*5 function for controlling ETWS services.

Installing the upgraded MX847570A SmartStudio in the LTE test configuration of the MD8475A not only eliminates the need to write complex sequence programs*6 but also supports service function tests of LTE smartphones and mobile terminals offering IMS/ETWS services.

In addition to the MX847570A SmartStudio upgrade, installing the newly developed MX847570A-080 option supports intentional generation of both abnormal status conditions, such as no network response and server error, as well as quasi-normal status conditions, such as no response from called party and called party busy, at testing of  smartphone IMS services. When communications problems are occurred at field trials on actual LTE networks, the function can help troubleshoot whether the cause is at the network or terminal side.

IMS/ETWS services are expected to become increasingly common as a key LTE application. 

With these upgraded MX847570A functions, Anritsu hopes to help speed-up the commercial rollout of LTE smartphones and mobile terminals supporting IMS/ETWS services.

 

Note: IMS/ETWS Services

IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is the standard for integrated multimedia services that use IP technology to combine various services over fixed and mobile networks.

ETWS (Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System) is a system for quickly broadcasting fixed emergency information about earthquakes and tsunami to mobile phones.

 

[Development Background]

LTE is an IP-based, high-speed mobile communications system for which a variety of applications are being actively developed. Above all, both IMS services allowing current voice and SMS services now running on 2G/3G infrastructure to run LTE networks, as well as ETWS services offering near-instant broadcasting of fixed emergency warnings to mobiles at disasters are becoming commonplace key LTE service applications.

In addition to the standard call processing tests, development of LTE smartphones and terminals with built-in IMS/ETWS services requires various service function tests with CSCF servers for IMS services and with Public Warning Service Center for ETWS services.

To meet these needs, Anritsu has both upgraded the functions of its MX847570A SmartStudio package for the MD8475A Signalling Tester by adding CSCF server and Public Warning Service Center functions, as well as developed the MX847570A-080 Extended CSCF option supporting intentional generation of abnormal (no network response, server error, etc.) and quasi-normal (no called party response, busy, etc.) network operation environments for IMS services.

Installing the MX847570A SmartStudio in the MD8475A supports service function tests of LTE smartphones and mobile terminals with built-in IMS/ETWS services. Adding the MX847570A-080 option supports verification of IMS service terminal operations in abnormal and quasi-normal network environments.
