Anritsu Corporation (President Hirokazu Hashimoto) announced the August 30 sales rollout of two new software packages extending the test functions of the company’s acclaimed MT8820C Radio Communication Analyzer; the new MX88212C-011 LTE FDD 2x2 MIMO*1 DL package supports Rx throughput tests*2 of LTE*3 mobile terminals and data cards*4 while the MX882012C-006 LTE FDD IP Data Transfer package measures IP data transfer between an application server connected to the MT8820C and a mobile terminal.

With a full line of built-in dedicated hardware and software for simulating base station operations and evaluating mobile terminal QoS, the MT8820C is Anritsu’s popular measurement platform supporting R&D and production of mobile terminals using different communications technologies.

Adding the MX882012C-011 to the MT8820C LTE measurement configuration enables easy Rx throughput tests of 2x2 MIMO LTE mobiles and data cards at data rates up to UE category 3 maximum rates (100 Mbps). When used in combination with the MX882012C-006, the above throughput tests are extended to IP data measurements as well.

LTE is an IP-based mobile communications service offering fast communications speeds of better than 100 Mbps using MIMO technology. Consequently, mobile terminal and data card manufacturers urgently need measuring instruments supporting Rx throughput tests for MIMO and IP data technologies. This release of extended test functions for Anritsu’s MT8820C meets these needs and assures a smooth start to commercial LTE services.

[Development Background]

LTE is a 3.9G communications technology providing high-speed wireless communications comparable to FTTH speeds. Commercial LTE services are scheduled to start in Japan and the USA during the second half of FY2010 with an accelerating trend towards mass production of LTE data cards for use in mobile terminals, laptop PCs, notepads, etc.

As an IP-based mobile communications service, LTE achieves maximum speeds of better than 100 Mbps using MIMO technology. Consequently, Rx throughput tests of IP-based communications in a MIMO operating environment are a key requirement for development and production of LTE mobiles and data cards.

This release of the MT8820C with extended LTE measurement functions meets today’s critical need for Rx throughput tests at data rates of UE category 3 maximum rates (100 Mbps).

[Product Outline]

The MT8820C Radio Communication Analyzer is a measurement platform for development and production of LTE mobile terminals and data cards. It simulates the operation of base stations using a combination of hardware and software supporting most of the world’s communications technologies to evaluate the QoS and call processing functions (status of communications with base station) of mobile terminals.

Installing the newly released MX882012C-011 software in the MT8820C LTE measurement configuration supports Rx throughout tests of 2x2 MIMO LTE mobile terminals and data cards; adding the MX882012C-006 extends throughput measurements to data transfers between an application server connected to the MT8820C and the LTE mobile. This powerful combination of the MX882012C-011 and MX882012C-006 meets the measurement and test needs of all 2x2 MIMO LTE terminal and card developers and manufacturers.

The MT8820C already fully supports RF TRx tests of LTE terminals and data cards. This new release adds support for Rx throughout tests at UE category 3 maximum IP data rates in a 2x2 MIMO environment. Separate installation of the MX882012C-011 and MX882012C-006 assures smooth, cost-effective, tailored testing meeting the needs of both R&D and manufacturing.

■ Power Consumption and Heat Tests

Because LTE is mobile, high-speed, communications technology, a key subject is how to suppress increases in power consumption and internal heat generation. These newly released software packages help verify power consumption and heat generation of LTE terminals and laptop PCs with data cards by testing IP data throughput at maximum speeds of 100 Mbps.

The MT8820C is fully compatible with the MT8820B/MT8815B, assuring that previous investment in test jigs and software is not wasted. The MT8820C can be swapped easily into production lines using the MT8820B/MT8815B without need for tooling time and money.
