Luton, UK- 14th February 2011-Communications test equipment manufacturer Anritsu has announced the installation by Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) of two MD1260A IP/Ethernet analyzers, which support the latest IEEE standards for 40 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 100GbE networks.

Investment in the latest high-performance test technology from Anritsu is part of a strategy by AMS-IX – which is the world’s largest internet exchange by traffic volume – to design its network infrastructure for fast-growing volumes of IP data throughput.

To achieve this, AMS-IX is replacing an existing network configuration based on multiple aggregated 10GbE links with an architecture using 100GbE-standard routers and switches. This architecture reduces network complexity, improves performance and eases network management operations.

The requirement for test equipment that supports this new 100GbE architecture has led AMS-IX to install the MD1260A, which is an advanced network analyzer optimized for 40/100GbE networks. Providing complete coverage of testing requirements for next-generation IP networks, the MD1260A offers 40/100GbE tolerance tests which exceed the IEEE/ITU-T standards.

The Chief Technical Officer of AMS-IX, Henk Steenman said: ‘Many Internet service providers and millions of Internet users rely on AMS-IX for efficient routing of network traffic, so the integrity and performance of our network infrastructure is of the utmost importance. AMS-IX has been supported for more than eight years by Anritsu’s previous generation of 10GbE instruments, so we are very confident that its new 100GbE test technology will meet our needs over the long term.’

Hirokazu Hamada, head of R&D for General Purpose Measurement Solutions at Anritsu, said: ‘All service providers face the issue of increasing bandwidth usage driven by demand for cloud services and video traffic, but AMS-IX is taking the lead in the adoption of 100GbE solutions. Anritsu is delighted to be able to offer network owners such as AMS-IX a means to provide complete coverage of the 100GbE test standards with a single, high-performance instrument.’

About AMS-IX

AMS-IX - Amsterdam Internet Exchange - is a neutral and independent Internet exchange providing services since the early 1990’s. AMS-IX is one of the largest Internet Interconnection Points worldwide. More than 400 networks come together in Amsterdam from all over the world to exchange over 1200 Gbps (1.2Terabit per second) of Internet traffic. The AMS-IX platform provides a professional, high quality peering services recognized for its wide diverse of traffic from regular traffic, video/TV, mobile or voice IP. Additionally, AMS-IX hosts the first mobile peering point worldwide, the Global GPRS Roaming Exchange (GRX) and the Mobile Data Exchange. (MDX).
