Module 8 : RF Fundamentals - Introduction to Propagation

This module covers RF signal propagation through the air from antenna to antenna.  It starts with Free Space propagation (where the signal is unobstructed), then progresses into Plane Earth propagation, where the signal encounters reflections and has to pass through obstructions.  Module 8 covers:

  • Various propagation formulas and what their terms do
  • The concept of Intercept and Slope
  • The point where Free Space Propagation changes to Plane Earth Propagation
  • How fading works - how RF Fields add and subtract to increase and decrease signal strength
  • The three types of fading: Rician, Rayleigh and Lognormal
  • Knife Edge Diffraction
  • Radio Horizon and Refraction
  • Questions to confirm knowledge of the topics throughout the module, followed by a quiz at the end to test student knowledge
