PIM Test Power Level

The industry recognized specification for Passive Intermodulation (PIM) testing is IEC 62037. This specification was first released in 1999 and updated in 2012. This specification defines the technical requirements for PIM test equipment as well as provides test procedures for measuring RF components such as connectors, cable assemblies, antennas and filters. The current version of the specification only addresses factory PIM testing. A working group within the IEC will address the unique challenges of field PIM testing with portable test equipment in a future release of the specification.

In order to promote measurement consistency, IEC 62037 currently recommends that components used in mobile communications systems be tested using 2x 20 Watt (43 dBm) test tones. This recommendation has served the wireless industry well through the development and deployment of 2G and 3G systems. With the more stringent requirements of 4G and 5G systems, demand for higher linearity (lower PIM) construction is needed. With this need, it is time to reassess the historical test power level recommended by IEC 62037 and determine if 40 Watt (46 dBm) test power might better serve modern mobile communications networks.

Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA)

Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) is a technique for geo-locating RF sources. It requires three or more remote receivers (probes) capable of detecting the signal of interest. Each probe is synchronized in time to capture corresponding I/Q data blocks. Software shifts the time signature of each I/Q data set to find the difference in the arrival time at each probe. This gives the difference in the distance of the source from each set of probes. Using several probes provides a set of curved lines that indicate solutions to the distance equations. The actual RF source sits at the intersection of these lines.

TDOA can provide a very accurate location estimate (< 100 m) in a short period of time. To successfully use TDOA it is essential to understand the type of signals that can be used, how the results depend on the geometry of the measurement (probe and source locations), what the sources of uncertainty are and how to mitigate them, and how to know if the answer is meaningful.

Can a spectrum analyzer be connected to a cable that has DC voltage?

Yes, just don't exceed the maximum voltage that is normally described on the spectrum analyzer port

Can I get a maintenance manual for the MS2721B.

Yes, the part number is 10580-00177 and it can be ordered from your local Service Center.

What is the difference between an OSL calibration and FlexCal?

With the OSL calibration, you have to calibrate each time you change the frequency range. With the FlexCal, you can change the frequency range and you don't have to perform another calibration. FlexCal is great for troubleshooting purposes. The accuracy can be affected if your span is really narrow so for optimum accuracy, it is recommended to use the OSL calibration.

How do I calibrate my thru when my DUT has the same gender connector on the input and output?

Use the phase equal adapters provided in the calibration kit.  Refer to page 7-3 of your VNA operation manual for a detailed description on the use of phase equal adapters.

Can I use a 4-port test set extension with a "C" revision Lightning?

No, the 4-port test set extension requires option 15 which adds direct sampler access on the front panel. This option was not available for the "C" revision Lightnings.

Can I connect a printer to my S312D Site Master that is not on the printer list?

Yes but there is no guarantee that it will work. Only those printers listed have been tested and are known to work properly with the Site Master.

Can I use the 36584 4 port AutoCal module to calibrate my 37369D?

No, the 36584 AutoCal is only specified to 9 GHz and was designed to work with the Scorpion VNAs.

Can I use an Anritsu MA4701A sensor on a ML243xA series power meter.

Yes, the MA4701A can be used on the ML243xA power meters but since the pin configuration is different you will need an adapter which is part number MA2499B.

Can I use Agilent Vee with my MS462xB/D?

Yes.  While there are currently no drivers written, it is still possible to control the MS462xB/D with Agilent Vee using the GPIB commands.  Refer to the GPIB programming guide.

Can I change the Port Connectors on the 37000D?

Yes.  The universal test port connector on the Lightning allows the user to change the test port connectors to GPC-7, K, N, and 3.5mm for the 40GHz test sets and GPC-7, K, SSMA, and V for the 65GHz test sets.  A test port wrench, P/N 01-202, will be required.

Why does my Short/Open calibration standard not look like a short/open when I test it with a calibrated network analyzer?

All calibration standards have a length associated with them. This will appear as a phase offset when tested on a calibrated VNA. This additional phase length is accounted for on the calibration characterization file (cal disk).

Can I use my Lightning Calibration Kit, 365X on a Scorpion?

While the Scorpion will not read the cal file disk, it is possible to enter the calibration coeficients manually.  During the calibration process, the MS462xB/D will prompt the user for a connector type.  If the user selects "User Defined," the MS462xB/D will then allow the user to enter the calibration coefficients manually.

How can I improve a noisy trace on my VNA?

Reduce the IF bandwidth and increase averaging.

Can I improve my autocal thru calibration?

Yes, by using a thru update.

Can I use my Scorpion calibration kit, 375x, on a Lightning?

While the Lightning will not read the cal file disk, it is possible to enter the calibration coeficients manually.  During the calibration process, the 37000D will prompt the user for a connector type.  If the user selects "User Defined," the 37000D will then allow the user to enter the calibration coefficients manually.  The user must make sure that the measurement frequency does not exceed the calibration kit frequency.

I have downloaded the latest firmware for the MT8852A/B onto my PC. What is the firmware upgrade process for the MT8852A/B?

1. On the PC unzip the file downloaded for the firmware upgrade.

2. Connect the serial cable from the MT8852A/B to the PC. Make sure the PC is using COM port 1.

3. Press config button on the MT8852A/B. Scroll down using the down arrow to System feature and press the select key.

4. On the MT8852A/B scroll to Software update and press select. The following step must be performed in this order and must be done within a few seconds.

5. On the MT8852A/B Scroll to BootLoad.

6. Press select

7. On the PC click on H_Boot1. (double click) You should get a pop up window and it should show data transfer. The upgrade should take 7-10 minutes.

I need a Cable and Antenna Analyzer and VNA that I can use to test cable TV applications that have an impedance of 75 Ohms. Can I use the MS2024/26A on 75 Ohm systems?

Yes the MS2024/26A can be use to test 75 ohm systems. When using 75 ohm matching pads you are limited to 3GHz for your testing. You need to use a matching pad, part number 12N50-75B and 75 Ohm calibration components. The calibration components are:

22N75 Open/Short, DC to 3GHz, N(m) 75 ohms

22NF75 Open/Short, DC to 3GHz, N(f) 75 ohms

26N75A Precision Termination, DC to 3 GHz, N(m), 75 ohms

26NF75A Precision Termination, DC to 3 GHz, N(f), 75 ohms

I have an S332D with the Transmission Measurement option. If I turn on the Bias Tee while in the Transmission Measurement mode and then go to the Frequency Return Loss mode without turning the Bias Tee off does the DC voltage on the RF out port stay on?

Yes the DC voltage will still be present at the RF out port in this scenario. If you do not need the voltage for your test you should turn the Bias Tee off before going to the Frequency Return Loss mode to save battery power.

I need to do a DTF measurement from 1930 MHz to 1945 MHz on my Site Master. When I set F2 to 1945 MHz I get an error message "New Values Invalid".

Your data points needs to be changed to 130 Data points.  At 130 sata points you can have a span of 13 MHz or larger.  At 259 data points the minimum span is 25.9 MHz.  At 517 data points the minimum span is 51.7 MHz. In the DTF parameter screen it shows the maximum span setting in the Resolution parameter.

From the frequencies 250 - 320 MHz my MS2026A does not look correct. It has a saw tooth look between these frequencies. This was intermittent as a power off/on would fix it for a short time. Then I noticed the IF Cal is OFF warning.

Factory Calibration is OFF. Insure that the battery level is adequate for operation or that the temperature is within acceptable limits. Reset to factory defaults with either Factory Defaults, ESC+ON, or MASTER RESET, System + ON. Caution: Use of MASTER RESET, System + ON, will erase all user saved setups and measurement traces and return the unit to a factory default condition. If the error persists, then contact your Anritsu Service Center.
