Anritsu enhances its CMA 3000 all-in-one field tester with Synchronous Ethernet testing

All-round Easy-to-use test tool for the Daily Operation Accelerates Access Network Trouble Resolution

Anritsu A/S, a subsidiary of Anritsu Corporation, a global provider of operational support solutions for advanced and converged networks, announced today the availability of a new Synchronous Ethernet test option for the all-round and easy-to-use CMA 3000 field tester.

The new option supports Synchronous Ethernet testing from 10 Gbps to 10 Mbps. Test of the two techniques that defined for Ethernet synchronization are supported:

  • Physical synchronization signal forwarding as defined in ITU-T recommendations G.8261, G.8262 and G.8264 (in many cases this is now called SyncE)
  • Protocol based synchronization as defined in IEEE1588 v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP)

The new option allows both active out-of-service testing and in-service bi-directional monitoring of Synchronous Ethernet links for analysis of live networks. The CMA 3000 field tester has supported dual port testing at 10 Gbps for more than a year and also supports dual port testing of Synchronous Ethernet links at 10 Gbps.

With the new option operators and equipment manufacturers can now quickly test and measure network communication links based on Synchronous Ethernet. Further options support testing of Ethernet up to 10 Gbps, IP, VoIP, SDH up to STM-64, E3, E4 and V-series interface lines, which together with the powerful E1 test capabilities for the basic CMA 3000 makes it a very versatile test solution.

Thanks to the bidirectional monitoring capability the user can quickly verify that both sides of the Synchronous Ethernet link are working properly with the new option for the CMA 3000. For out-of-service installation and commissioning testing of Synchronous Ethernet links the CMA 3000 provides powerful statistical measurements that can be documented with professional reports. For IEEE 1588 v2 (PTP) the instrument can also:

  • Act as a master using the internal instrument clock or a GPS signal (when present) as clock source.
  • Act in slave mode; this involves choosing the best master wall clock and constantly adjusting the clock.

Hereby the user can make the CMA 3000 simulate an IEEE 1588 v2 (PTP) clock and verify that the PTP network works correctly.

As you can combine testing of Synchronous Ethernet, Ethernet, VoIP, E1/E3/E4 and SDH testing in one self-contained unit, the field technician is well equipped to solve the problems in the access network.

"We see that Synchronous Ethernet is coming into today’s communication networks in particular in mobile networks, where there is a need to migrate from legacy synchronous technologies (SDH and PDH) to Ethernet" said Ole Soerensen, Product Manager, Anritsu A/S. "Although these operators are moving to Ethernet and IP based networks, they still have the legacy technologies in their networks and need to keep them operational. Therefore it is important for field technicians installing and maintaining access networks to have a universal tool like the CMA 3000 to test all the technologies they have to take care of."

CMA 3000 Synchronous Ethernet test option highlights:

  • Active out-of-service testing of Synchronous Ethernet links
  • In-service monitoring of Synchronous Ethernet links
  • Easy to use operation with intuitive setup pages on the large color screen
