RoHS Compliance for Custom Parts

RoHS for suppliers of Anritsu Parts or Assemblies build to Specification.

In order for Anritsu Company to meet its environmental responsibilities and European and Asian customers’ demands, we must convert our products to be RoHS compliant.

When an Anritsu drawing or specification is marked with the statement: “This part of assembly must be RoHS compliant, for information see http://www.us.anritsu.com/about/suppliers (this website)”, it is the responsibility of the Supplier to ensure the part or assembly meets the RoHS requirements. Sufficient proof of compliance must be provided upon request.

What is RoHS?

RoHS is the acronym for Restriction of Hazardous Substances (also known as Directive 2002/95/EC). It originated in the European Union and restricts the use of specific hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products. All applicable products in the EU market after July 1, 2006 must pass RoHS compliance (with some exemptions). China has also stated similar requirements, which are to take effect March 1, 2007.

What is required?

Products destined to EU and China (and soon many other countries, including the USA) can not have more than the allowable MCV (maximum concentration values) of the six restricted hazardous substances listed below.

What are Maximum Concentration Values (MCVs)?

RoHS specifies maximum allowable levels for the following six restricted materials:
  • Lead (Pb): 1000 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg): 1000 ppm
  • Cadmium (Cd): 100 ppm, the same as 0.01%
  • Hexavalent Chromium (CrVI): 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): 1000 ppm
The law states this as “A maximum concentration value of 0.1% by weight in homogeneous materials for lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and of 0.01% weight in homogeneous materials for cadmium shall be tolerated.”

What does “Homogeneous” mean?

Homogeneous material refers to the materials of uniform composition throughout. This means a unit that can not be mechanically disjointed (separated by mechanical actions such as unscrewing, cutting, crushing, grinding and abrasive processes) in single materials”.

How do I Comply?

Usually suppliers will request information from their suppliers (with the MCV table as a paper trail) to determine the composition of their products, but products can also be tested for these materials using portable RoHS analyzers known as x-ray fluorescence or XRF metal analyzers, such as those from Niton and Innov-X Systems.

Which parts are affected?

In all cases where Anritsu’s drawing or specification states that a part or assembly must be RoHS compliant, Anritsu requires that the Supplier create an auditable trail of all components that make up the part or assembly.
