Anritsu Launches MP1800A 56 Gbaud PAM4 BER Test Solution

Anritsu introduced PAM4 signal testing using MP1800A Signal Quality Analyzer.
The developed 64 Gbaud*1 PAM4 DAC*2 G0374A supports 53.125 Gbaud PAM4 transmission defined by the next-generation 400GbE*3 standard and can generate high-quality PAM4*4 signals at rates up to 64 Gbaud. In addition, combined use with the high-input sensitivity BER tester supports 400GbE 53.125 Gbaud BER measurements

October 28th, 2016 – Anritsu Corporation (President Hirokazu Hashimoto) launched its 56 Gbaud PAM4 BER Test Solution using the Signal Quality Analyzer MP1800A on October 28, 2016.
The developed 64 Gbaud*1 PAM4 DAC*2 G0374A supports 53.125 Gbaud PAM4 transmission defined by the next-generation 400GbE*3 standard and can generate high-quality PAM4*4 signals at rates up to 64 Gbaud. In addition, combined use with the high-input sensitivity BER tester supports 400GbE 53.125 Gbaud BER measurements.

[Development Background]
The recent explosive growth in network data traffic is driving efforts to increase communications speeds between servers and network equipment; the next-generation 400GbE Ethernet standard is being adopted to increase transmission capacity per unit time by speeding-up symbol bit rates, using more lanes, and implementing PAM technologies. In contrast to legacy NRZ*5 signalling technology, PAM4 signals have the merit of transferring twice the amount of data per unit time, but some technical problems such as reducing power consumption, and improving SNR remain to be solved by testing using higher-quality signal sources and high-input sensitivity measurements.

Using Anritsu's new, easily expandable G0374A solution and Signal Quality Analyzer MP1800A series with multi-channel Pulse Pattern Generator (PPG) and Error Detector (ED) Generator) in combination with the company's 56G/64 Gbit/s DEMUX MP1862A implements the world's first 56 Gbaud NRZ/PAM4 BER measurement solution for development of next-generation communications standards while maximizing equipment investment and controlling additional costs.

[Summary of PAM4 BER Test using G0374A and MP1800A series]
The Signal Quality Analyzer MP1800A is a plug-in module type Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT); it can generate synchronous signals for up to 8 channels using the 32G multi-channel PPG module. The G0374A accessory for the MP1800A series is used with the 32 Gbit/s Multi-channel PPG MU183020A to convert half-rate 32 Gbit/s NRZ signals and generate 64 Gbaud NRZ/PAM4 signals. In addition, combination with the 56G/64 Gbit/s DEMUX MP1862A, and 28G/32 Gbit/s High Sensitivity ED MU183040B supports BER measurements of high-baud-rate PAM4 signals.
