Wireless Industry Data Continues to Be Upbeat

The wireless industry enjoyed an outstanding 2007, according to CTIA-The Wireless Association. On the opening day of the CTIA WIRELESS show in Las Vegas, the trade organization announced that, as of December 2007, there were 255+ million wireless users, up more than 22 million subscribers from 2006. The survey conducted by the group also recorded record-breaking six-month wireless service revenues of $71 billion for the second half of 2007.

To no one's surprise, non-voice services fueled the growth. Wireless data service revenues rose 53% to more than $23 billion. This total amounted to about 17% of all wireless service revenues for the recently completed calendar year.

According to the survey, text messaging continues to be enormously popular, and wireless subscribers are sending more pictures and other multi-media messages. Nearly 4 billion MMS messages were sent during the second half of 2007 alone. This is a dramatic increase over all of 2006, when only 2.7 billion messages were sent.

These numbers could explain why the vast majority of the 40,000 attendees were so upbeat during the three-day show, held April 1 – 3. The nearly 1,200 exhibitors shared that enthusiasm, including Anritsu. Solidifying its leadership position and commitment to Next Generation Networks (NGN), Anritsu displayed a series of LTE test solutions, as well as instruments for all 3G technologies.

Among the products on display were the MS271xB family of economy microwave spectrum analyzers, highlighted in this issue's Microwave/RF section, and the MS269xA, MG3700A, and MD8480C, outlined in the Wireless section.
