Microwave Components and Device Characterization

Engineers need precise methods of characterizing components due to greater design complexities caused by modulation schemes such as PSK and QAM (used in WCDMA and EV-DO) and OFDM (used in WiMAX and LTE), as well as higher power-efficiency requirements and improved linearity. Modern devices and components must also introduce less distortion and be developed at lower costs. These factors make design and test a bigger challenge than ever before.

Signal Analysis will never be the same again

MS269xA Series Signal Analyzers are the latest high performance signal analyzers for next-generation communication applications. The MS269xA Series Signal Analyzer base units include swept spectrum analysis, FFT signal analysis, and a precision digitizer function. Add options to incorporate a Signal Generator, to turn the instrument into a hassle free, plug and play, one box solution.

The MS269xA Series Signal Analyzers support a standard analysis bandwidth of 31.25 MHz that can be extended to 62.5 MHz /125 MHz with optional hardware. Using a patented calibration process, the multipoint amplitude calibration and the phase calibration result in a level accuracy of ±0.5 dB across a 6 GHz span. No other analyzer on the market can meet that specification! These boxes are superlative in every way -- they measure the widest signals and using the latest technology, make measurements faster than ever before. The modular architecture ensures a box that grows as measurement requirements change.

A series of options enables standards-based modulation analysis, vector signal generation, and BER measurement. The end-user can configure a one-box solution that dramatically reduces cost, footprint, and Total Average Cycle Time (TACT) for device evaluation.

The MS269xA Series Signal Analyzers are accurate enough for the most demanding R&D environment, yet are fast enough for the factory floor! Currently supported applications include GSM, GPRS, EDGE, W-CDMA, mobile WiMAX, and LTE.

The wideband FFT signal analyzer (analysis bandwidth of 31.25 MHz with option for 62.5 MHz /125 MHz) supports high-speed continuous measurements including CCDF, frequency vs. time, spectrum, and power vs. time analysis. The standard digitizing function can capture waveforms and immediately play them out using the optional Signal Generator. An extended digitizer option adds the ability to capture signals up to 20 MHz wide for up to 4 hours.

MS4630B
10 Hz to 300 MHz

The MS4630B is suitable for electronics production lines demanding fast and accurate device measurements. It is particularly well suited to accurate, high-speed evaluation of IF filter resonance and group delay characteristics, as well as evaluating the impedance characteristics of resonators in AV equipment and PCs.

A fast sweep speed of 150µs/point is achieved using a high-speed synthesizer and digital signal processing (DSP) technologies. The post-processing data analysis functions have been strengthened with improved data processing macros that greatly increase the total production throughput.

In comparison to the earlier MS3401A/B and MS3606B network analyzers, the sweep speed is three times faster and the group delay measurement accuracy and stability have been improved by more than 10 times. In addition, the dynamic range has been improved to 120 dB (RBW: 1 kHz) while the weight of the analyzer has been dramatically reduced. Compatibility has been maintained between PTA and GPIB software commands, maintaining any current investment in PTA software.

MF2412C
Microwave Frequency Counter

The MF2400C series lineup is composed of three frequency counters: the MF2412C (20 GHz), the MF2413C (27 GHz), and the MF2414C (40 GHz). This series is ideal for evaluating mobile radio communications devices and circuits, and can also measure the carrier frequency and pulse width of burst signals. In addition to displaying measurement results on the 12-digit vacuum fluorescent display (VFD), frequency values can be read using the analog display function, which can be used for monitoring and is especially useful for adjusting the frequency of oscillators. Furthermore, the template function is perfect for assessing whether or not results fall within upper and lower frequency limit specification. Because the evaluation result is output from the AUX connector on the back panel as a Go/No-go signal, an easy-to-use, automatic measurement system can be configured using the GPIB function.

All of this has led to a greater need for instrumentation that provides complete and accurate information at the component level. Designers must conduct highly accurate linear and nonlinear measurements to confidently predict component behavior in “real world” conditions. Power measurements are also essential, due to the trend towards higher power levels in increasingly smaller packages. The ability to perform these tests accurately can help increase yield and speed time to market.

Anritsu has the test solutions to precisely characterize microwave components and devices. Our vector network analyzers (VNAs) provide pulse measurements, S-parameters, and more data to ensure that devices can be used in designs as diverse as Bluetooth devices, mobile phones, WLANs, military electronic-warfare (EW), electronic countermeasures (ECM) and radar systems. Anritsu’s family of pulse, wideband and CW power meters and power sensors deliver the precise power measurements necessary for today’s devices.

Our VNAs and power meters can also be combined with spectrum analyzers and other instruments, for integrated solutions that can provide an extensive array of measurement results on a device under test (DUT).

As further support to engineers who characterize microwave components and devices, Anritsu is a founding member of the OpenWave Forum. The forum is an alliance of RF and microwave firms working together to collaborate, create, and promote a unified and transparent data exchange format for larger-signal simulations, measurements, and models.
