Energy and Petrochemical

Wireless and fiber optic technologies are helping energy, petrochemical, and utility companies operate more efficiently. Fiber optics are being used to maximize oil drilling, while wireless communications improve operations and create a safer environment on offshore rigs and ships. Wireless technology is also being used by utility companies, as part of smart grids to help improve delivery of electricity to homes.

MA24105A
350 MHz — 4 GHz

The Anritsu MA24105A Inline Peak Power Sensor is designed to take accurate average power measurements over 2mW to 150 W, from 350 MHz to 4GHz. The sensor employs a "dual path" architecture that enables True-RMS measurements over the entire frequency and dynamic range allowing users to measure CW, multi-tone and digitally modulated signals such as GSM/EDGE, CDMA/EV-DO, WCDMA/HSDPA, WiMAX, and TD-SCDMA. The forward direction path also includes a 4 MHz bandwidth channel that has peak and comparator/integrator circuits that add measurement functions such as PEP power, crest factor, CCDF, and burst average power. Another detection circuit on the reverse direction adds reverse power measurement capabilities including reverse power, reflection coefficient, return-loss, and SWR. The presence of a micro-controller along with signal conditioning circuitry, ADC, and power supply in the sensor makes it a complete miniature power meter.

Operation with PC
The power sensor can be used with a PC running Microsoft Windows® via USB. It comes with PowerXpert™ application (version 2.1 or greater) for data display, analysis, and sensor control. The software provides a front panel display making the PC appear like a traditional power meter. The application has abundant features like data logging, power versus time graph, and offset table that enable quick and accurate measurements.

MT9083A
MT9083A

Until now, installing and maintaining optical networks required technicians to carry a variety of equipment which was not only cumbersome, but also expensive. Hearing this common complaint, Anritsu engineers have developed their new line of MT9083 ACCESS Master OTDRs. The MT9083A test sets are designed to make your measurement experience simple and error-free with true one-button fault location, pass/fail classification, automated file saving and naming and even a macrobend detection feature for identifying installation issues.  They feature multiple wavelengths and options to satisfy any network testing requirement: access or metro, FTTx or LAN...all without straining your budget.

For customers installing and maintaining metro area or core networks, the ACCESS Master offers an automated fiber construction application and multiple wavelengths including specialty applications such as 1383 nm for certifying legacy fibers for CWDM upgrades.

For FTTx networks, the MT9083 series provides both optical testing for optical splits up to a 1x128, plus quality of service (QoS) verification via the IP testing option. With the IP option, continuity, download speed, throughput and frame loss of Gigabit Ethernet links can be verified up to full line rate. It also features a unique way to troubleshoot live PON based, FTTx networks without additional costly and complicated external filters.

Additional features include an integrated light source and power meter plus options to customize the unit including higher range power meters, visual fault locator (VFL) and connector inspection microscope to ensure complete network evaluation with a single tool.

Fiber Optics

Fiber optic sensors and cables are commonly part of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) methods used to improve efficiency during upstream production, downstream transport, and refining of crude oil and natural gas. One popular EOR technique is Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD), which uses DTS (distributed temperature sensing) to provide oil and gas operators with a reliable and cost-effective way to better manage reservoirs, wellbores, and completions.

Many oil and gas companies rely on Anritsu to help ensure the proper installation and accurate operation of these systems. Anritsu OTDR technology is often used when a fiber line is installed in an oil well, and to check the line before a DTS run to ensure the most precise readings are made.

Offshore Wireless Communications

Oil and gas companies are also using wireless technologies to gather and transmit critical data that aid in managing drilling equipment, pumping systems, and level monitors. Wireless technologies are integral in voice and data communications between offshore rigs and ships, and mainland operations, as well.

Reliable communications services – whether it is broadband satellite, high-speed Internet, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), Wi-Fi, or VHF radio backhaul services – help in one other critical way. They help create a safer work environment for personnel.

For these all-important communications, Anritsu provides the VNA Master handheld vector network analyzers and Site Master handheld cable and antenna analyzers. Both families are compact, lightweight instruments designed to withstand the harshest environments. As importantly, they provide ease of operation and the accuracy necessary to maintain these crucial networks.

Smart Grid

Wireless technologies are also being used onshore by utility companies, as part of smart grids that help improve customer service and better control energy consumption. A smart grid system consists of home area networks (HAN), field area networks (FAN), and wide area networks (WAN). Each requires robust signal coverage to avoid interference. Utilities must have tools to effectively plan their systems, rapidly diagnose problems and maintain network security.

Anritsu’s line of Spectrum Master, Cell Master, and Site Master handheld analyzers, and indoor/outdoor coverage mapping tools provide utility companies with powerful and sophisticated analysis capabilities directly suited for their smart grid networks. These tools can aid in network planning, optimization, and maintenance of network infrastructure, saving utilities time and money.
